Rose Bandung

Description:
Bandung is the name of a drink popular in Malaysia and Singapore consisting of milk flavored with rose cordial, giving a pink color.

Ingredients:
* 3 cups sugar
* 2 1/2 cups water
* 1 egg white
* 1/2 eggshells, slgihtly crushed (yes, the shell. Make sure you wash the shell first)
* cochineal food coloring
* rose essence
* evaporated milk
* crushed ice (cubed if preferred.)

Directions:
- Put the sugar and water in a pan and bring to boil.
- After the sugar has dissolved, add egg white and shell (to clarify syrup).
- Simmer for half an hour for the syrup to thicken.
- Strain.
- Cool.
- Add a few drops of the food colouring and essence to taste.
- Dilute 1 part of syrup to 5 parts water (or less if to your liking).
- Make sure it is slightly sweeter than your preference because you are going to add evaporated milk.
- Add evaporated milk to taste. Approximately 2 tbsps for a glass.
- Add crushed/cubed ice.
- Enjoy.

or alternatively you can do my shortcut way..

I bought rose syrup and just added it to liquid on a ratio of 1 part rose syrup 4 parts water/liquid (could be cold water or cold milk or you can add ice cubes later).

For the liquid part aside from the water, I either use cows milk from tetra packs if I don't have evaporated milk, or I sometimes use powdered goat's milk to give it a different creamy taste. The carabao (or water buffalo's milk) is still something I have to acquire since its not always freshly available as to where I live in.

Summertime!

Hey, its not yet summer here in our dear country but I can hardly wait for the sting of the heat and all those beach outings and getting stung by the jellyfish...so with that in mind, when I heard this on Animax Asia channel, I just grabbed the embed codes from youtube so I could hear it play for the next 15 minutes over and over again.

Lyrics:
On the boardwalk
Working two shifts
Saving for thatdiamond ring
Then I'll quit
All the cool kids
Hanging south pier
Guess I'll have it figured out by next year

Summertime summertime
You do it to me
Everytime summertime
You do it to me
Ohhhhohhhohhh I'm restless
Ohhhhohhhohhh Defenseless
Oh I can feel it Baby is it real or is it just a sign
It's summertime

On the weekend
Got my ink done
Take my baby for a ride in the sun
At the boardwalk
On my four wheels
Now we're blasting down the shore and we feel
Summertime summertime
You do it to me
Everytime summertime
You do it to me

Ohhhhohhhohhh I'm restless
Ohhhhohhhohhh Defenseless
Oh I can feel it
Baby is it real or is it just a sign
It's summertime

Summertime summertime
You do it to me
Everytime summertime
You do it to me
Ohhhhohhhohhh I'm restless
Ohhhhohhhohhh Defenseless
Oh I can feel it Baby is it real or isit just a sign
I'm restless
Ohhhhohhhohhh
Defenseless
Oh I can feel it Baby is it real or is it just a sign
It's summertime...

A text from my dad

...began the whole train of thought. He usually texts me during weekends, telling me something obvious but which he feels he needs to emphasize - that I enjoy my weekend.
His text had been the one which woke me up in time for lunch or merienda, depending on the time you feel would be appropriate for such meals.

Then it was a series of texts afterwards all throughout the day. Hmmm...its unusual for me to have this kind of text-mode during weekends. And so, I also received at various times from Powerbooks staff, some messages telling me that my reserved books (Twilight series) have just arrived (yes, one by one)...but since I had already bought and read them while I was out of town, I had to cancel it (yes, one text at a time too).

All these text messages made me decide to watch a borrowed dvd from a friend who is avid fan of the Twilight, after all I should enjoy the weekend right? What could be more enjoyable than enjoying a movie which would not have you exercise your gray cells but just enjoy the thrill of love at first bite (if it ever came, which as it happens it does not and will not because its Book 1).

I was trying to see if the version I got had the uncut kissing scene of Edward and Bella. I turned it off after finding out its still the same as the one I saw in Singapore - with that scene abruptly stitched together, and quite different from what I had watched in New York.

Then I began thinking, although Rob Pattinson is a good-looking guy, both in Harry Potter and this movie, I was absolutely convinced that he can't compare with my and my mom's crush. Yesh! Hahaha..we both adore the same guy!

And no...its not what most people would think of when they see that sentence. We are not talking about my dad.

When I was in my pre-teen years, I actually had a huge crush on somebody who was also my mom's crush in her younger years. Weird eh? But who can blame me or her?

He is French (ah, je't adore!), he has won awards and there's something about his clean-cut good looks that makes me think - "Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and whoever is hot nowadays? well, you guys can move over..this guy is just oozing with ooh-la-lah". I think those actors and celebrities from the earlier decades were really points ahead when it comes to today's stars, although to be fair, the latter are not also to be sneezed at.

My dad knows about this crush of both of his girls..ehem..women. In fact, when my mom saw this hard-to-find poster of this crush of ours in an out of the way restaurant located in the bowels of the older part of Cebu City, he bought and lugged the complete frame way back to the house. One time, my mom and I also saw a poster, yet unframed in an old bookstore in Cebu, and she helped me put it up - frames etc. the works. My parents are really supportive of crushes hehehe.

Now that I think about it, that frame still hangs on the head-side of my bed at my home, and the other one is buried under a bunch of bags hanging on the hooks of my room's door. I should probably revisit those and dust them off and make sure they were not gnawed by insects or rats.

As I google and look at sites featuring either a video or a series of photos paying tribute to my crush (he still is somebody I compare guys with when I see them, and yes its unfair but who can come close?), I can only hopelessly wish that one of his sons was an exact replica of him.

Then I could at least transfer my crush to somebody younger and not have to admit still feeling weak-kneed and still emitting squeals when I see the pictures of his dad when he was so much younger - urgh, I still react like a typical teenager when I think of Alain .

Stray Thought: Creative Children

Just a stray thought which brushed past my mind a couple of seconds ago.

Children of couples who argue or wrangle verbally in front of their children grow up quite creative.

Let's weed out arguments which involve physical force, ok? But I think my above realization is true.

I left my "puso" in Cebu...

I've finally tasted this again in my January 2009 visit to my hometown, Cebu City. I can't remember when I ate something like this, but my guess is probably more than 3 years has passed.

This is what we fondly call "puso" a.k.a. "hanging rice". Well, am not going into details of how its produced, but I will point you to a link which explains it.

This kind of food is something I've only seen in Cebu..hmm....okay... maybe some places may have gone into it, but suffice to
say its not something that is very prevalent in Makati or Manila.

As the first paragraph of the link I will put here goes:

"Hanging rice" is the English term Cebuanos apply to something called puso, which is, essentially, boiled rice.

But leaving it at that is like dismissing fettuccine as noodles. Puso is rice, yes, but it is more than that; puso is an integral part of the barbecue culture of Cebu, and I would go so far as to call it an art. Puso is to the Cebuano what the baguette is to the Parisian, or the bagel is to the New Yorker. This page is my wholy inadequate tribute to puso.

- taken from http://www.wayblima.com/cebu-food-puso.html so do please check it out as it explains the art of our ubiquitous staple (at least in Cebu)...the lowly but hardy "puso".

and for fellow Filipinos...sorry about the title, but it was really...ehem..pun intended...hehehe...

The Tide is High Progression

And all along I thought it was Blondie who was the first who sang this song.

It was only because I came across the latest remake of this that I listened to the following versions.

First is the one sung by Paragon. According to wikipedia: This 1967 song was written by John Hold and performed by said group with Mr. Hold as lead singer.

Then US New Wave band Blondie came along in 1980 and sang this is a reggae/ska style. It was released as a single, and appeared as the fourth track on the band's fifth album, Autoamerican.

This song was covered again by the British vocal trio Atomic Kitten and again reached number one in the UK in September 2002. This time, the song was remade with keyboards to make it more pop-oriented. Their version of the song also added a new bridge, hence the subtitle "Get the Feeling".

"Numba 1 (Tide Is High)" is the latest version as of this writing, and is performed by Kardinal Offishall and featuring Keri Hilson. The song was released in September 2008 as the second official single from Kardinal's album Not 4 Sale.Aside from the album version, which features Rihanna, there are three other versions of "Numba 1 (Tide Is High)". The second is the original version, featuring Nicole Scherzinger. The third version features Rihanna and Nicole Scherzinger. The fourth version is the official single and features Keri Hilson. There is also another version which features Rihanna, Nicole Scherzinger and Keri Hilson.

And this is how I am supposed to be....?!

Ha!! and a double ha!!

That was my reaction after reading a short interpretation of how the planets were assembled in the heavens and their astrological influence on poor little me during the time of my birth. Uh-huh, the results of reading my birth chart seems to be almost true, or maybe its just wishful thinking.

Well, at least my guess for my ascendant (rising sign) and the sign for Mercury as ruling planet correct.

And I did not have too many Taurus signs in many of the planets (it is not good for Aries and Taurus signs to mix almost evenly in an individual) so that is a relief. I probably am muttering gibberish to some peeps who think astrology is hogwash..but I actually find it quite fun. I don't bet all my money on it though as being the end all and be-all of my existence :-)

I have to re-evaluate also where the other signs are placed when it comes to my disposition for love, emotions and other such aspects of my personality so I am only sharing the results of the sun, ascendant and the signs for the planets of Mercury and Venus, said to rule the mind and heart respectively.

*mutters* and I was so sure I had Cancer or Libra when it came to the moon and Venus...rats!

Rising Sign is in 23 Degrees Gemini

Extremely active by nature, you like to get around, meet people and do different things. Very restless, you just can't seem to stay put. You need to be involved in several projects at once in order to keep your mind stimulated. You like to read books and to write letters and to talk -- constantly. Seemingly ageless, you will always appear to be much younger than you really are. Very adaptable and inquisitive, you are always open to new ideas and experiences. A "jack-of-all-trades", you are lively and versatile. Because of the high nervous tension that you always seem to have, athletic activity would be a good way for you to burn off energy. But be careful of a tendency to experience things only superficially -- try to dig in and absorb things at a deeper level.

Sun is in 08 Degrees Aries

By nature, you are very energetic and high-spirited. You are fiercely independent -- you must be first in everything you do, and you enjoy taking risks. You are the one who will rush in where angels fear to tread. Quite brilliant at initiating new projects, you are terrible at following them through to completion. You are an enthusiastic leader but you tend to be a reluctant follower. Often you are quick to anger, but you usually recover just as fast, regretting later things you said when you were upset. One of your best traits is that you are simple and direct, blunt and honest -- just be careful you do not hurt others' feelings. Your need to be competitive at all costs may provoke resistance from others, but, as long as you maintain your usual Sunny good humor, this should not prove to be a major problem for you.

Mercury is in 15 Degrees Aries.

Very quick-witted, you are known for being an independent thinker. You love to debate and argue, and are excellent at repartee and battles of wits. At times, however, you act too fast on hastily formed opinions and thus waste a lot of energy defending your rash and sometimes incorrect conclusions. It is perfectly acceptable for you to defend your beliefs with your usual vigor, but try not to take the opinions of others as personal insults.

Venus is in 24 Degrees Aries.

You are a very affectionate person but you hate to be tied down. You are more than willing to be the aggressor in initiating new relationships. Indeed, once you have set your sights on someone, you tend to pursue him or her ardently and passionately. But you do demand your own way in a relationship. Try to give in to your partner's needs and desires once in a while.

Cat's Astro Chart

Here is the Astro Chart you requested:

Hi there, here is the interpretation of the astrological chart that you asked for. Also attached is a .GIF graphic file which depicts your chart wheel. Thank you for visiting the Astrolabe WEB site at http://alabe.com This report has been created especially for you. It represents your Unique picture at the time you were born and at the place you were born. If you are unsure of the exact time of day of your birth (or the date or the place), the reading will probably not seem as accurate as it could be in certain places, but other parts will seem to be very appropriate. You will notice at certain places in the reading that contradictory information seems to be given. This is to be expected, because the personality of most people is extremely complex. For example, at times we are quite shy and at other times we are very aggressive, and so forth. You will also notice that, at certain points in the reading, certain patterns may be repeated over and over, especially in a longer more detailed report than this one. This is also to be expected. This simply means that your horoscope has an extremely strong focus on this particular pattern and that you should pay extra close attention to what is said about it. Now, on with your Report!

Name: Cat Herrera
March 30 1970

Cebu, PHIL

Rising Sign is in 23 Degrees Gemini
Extremely active by nature, you like to get around, meet people and do different things. Very restless, you just can't seem to stay put. You need to be involved in several projects at once in order to keep your mind stimulated. You like to read books and to write letters and to talk -- constantly. Sun is in 08 Degrees Aries.
By nature, you are very energetic and high-spirited. You are fiercely independent -- you must be first in everything you do, and you enjoy taking risks. You are the one who will rush in where angels fear to tread. Quite brilliant at initiating new projects, you are terrible at following them through to completion. Your need to be competitive at all costs may provoke resistance from others, but, as long as you maintain your usual Sunny good humor, this should not prove to be a major problem for you.

Moon is in 04 Degrees Capricorn.
You are serious and shy and very uncomfortable in those situations where spontaneous and exuberant emotional reactions seem called for. An achiever, you prefer doing practical, worthwhile things that produce tangible results. You need role models to respect, love and emulate. You tend to feel that you're a failure unless you get an important and highly respected position in life. Don't be so hard on yourself! For you, practical needs always win out over emotional considerations. Remember that you too have the right to comfort, security and love. Dutiful and patient, when you make an emotional commitment, you sign on for the long haul -- your love is long- enduring.

Mars is in 16 Degrees Taurus.
Careful, slow and thorough about all that you do, at times you are also willful and stubborn when others try to alter your course. You are definitely not a quitter -- you will work long and hard to get what you want. Your possessions are very important to you. One of your continuing problems is that you tend to regard the significant people in your life much the same way as you do your possessions -- you become overly attached and much too jealous. You repress your anger when you get upset and that is not healthy. Try to learn to show your anger immediately in order to avoid painful explosions later.

Jupiter is in 03 Degrees Scorpio.
You love to dig deep beneath surface appearances in order to find out what is really happening. A persistent researcher, you are very interested in the psychology of any situation. You tend to become overwhelmed by the complexity of what you uncover, however, and that makes you a bit gun-shy about explaining things to others. But you must learn to try to communicate as best you can because what you know is really very valuable to others.

Saturn is in 07 Degrees Taurus.
Complete freedom of choice makes you ill at ease. You must have a firm, ordered, secure foundation in your life in order to feel comfortable. You do not adapt easily and tend to fear the new and untried. You constantly fear that you do not have enough (love, property, material things, etc.) and this makes you tend toward being selfish, withdrawn and stingy. If you try to surround yourself with supportive people in your environment, you will become more emotionally self-supporting.

Uranus is in 06 Degrees Libra.
You, as well as your entire peer group, have a very free, unstable and unconventional approach to relationships and emotional commitments. You will be attracted to experiments in marriage and shared lifestyles. Personal freedom is more important to you than entangling emotional bonds. In the realm of art and aesthetics, you are attracted to the bizarre, shocking and unusual.

Neptune is in 00 Degrees Sagittarius.
You, and your entire generation, are heavily involved in investigating and idealizing foreign and exotic intellectual systems and religious philosophies. The most extreme ideals will be pursued with gusto. You will be at the forefront of humanitarian attempts to improve the lot of those who are in need of assistance. You will be comfortable with the concept of the "global village."

Pluto is in 25 Degrees Virgo.
For your entire generation, this will be a time when profound changes in society's attitude toward work, duty and responsibility will be initiated. Radical changes in attitudes toward personal health and general nutrition will be promulgated and gain wide acceptance and practice.

N. Node is in 11 Degrees Pisces.
You're attracted to others who need your assistance. You seem to go out of your way to form relationships with those who are weak, sick, injured, addicted or troubled in some way or other. At your best you can indeed provide the relief that others need. But at times you can be victimized by those who would prey on your good nature and take advantage of you. This can lead to all sorts of negative situations -- make sure that those you assist are truly worthy of your time, energy and commitment. A little enlightened self-protectiveness on your part can make your life work much, much smoother!

So there I was just browsing about looking for things they say about Aries and other zodiac signs (I was interested in finding out for example that Angelina Jolie is an honorary Aries, she is Gemini but with many planets in Aries) when I finally came across this link and I immediately tried to find out if my guess about my ascendant and moon signs were correct.

Luckily mom told me before the time of my birth (I hope she got it right and wasn't in too much pain to scramble the times.)

For those interested, the time of your birth plus the place you were born are necessary for more "accurate" results.

I had a jolly time piecing together and comparing what I read with what I thought of my personality.

Have fun!

Mood and Rant: I don't care

17th of January 2009
Makati City, Philippines

This week has been a bit a mix of pluses and minuses for me. More on the good plus signs though.

I arrived from Cebu City on Tuesday lacking sleep (as usual) but found a new way of saving on taxi costs traveling back from the Centennial airport to my current home. I used to dread taking PAL flights because it would mean that I would either wait for a long while and wrangle with taxi drivers for cab fare back to Makati where I live..or suffer the agonizingly high taxi rates of the "metered" taxis in the arrival area. After hastily unpacking what I could, it was straight to work.

I met (after so many months) and got some leftover goodies from some people working in a bank, and I had fun talking to them about Twilight (they haven't finished it yet) hehehe. Girl talk is sometimes a very nice way to relax and take one's mind off work and the pressures. Never mind that they ran out of stock of what I had wanted. I also didn't get a penalty for late payment of the credit card.

I met up with some old and new friends from the OneAsean group on Thursday when Rogertourman arrived in Manila this week. I ate good food and enjoyed the company but missed the karaoke part due to work.

I actually was supposed to meet up with Roger by Wednesday but begged off due to work, only to find out the last 2 minutes that the phone conferences were cancelled...so I missed my chance of going on the cruise on Manila Bay (which I've never done before, even if I have been here in Manila for a couple of years already)

My brod is going to Dubai by next week, so I had to meet him as quickly as I could and give him more pasalubongs (gifts/souvenirs) from my mom and moi. I had dinner with his wife and youngest child (incidentally I just remembered that he is also my godchild hehehe) at an "eat-all-you-can" in Kamayan on Friday.

I almost also attended a wedding of one of my officemates in a previous company this Saturday. But I slept around 5 am already the other night, plus I hate travelling to places here in Luzon where I don't have a companion especially if I've never been there before, so I had to bow out and tell them it was better I see them later after the wedding and give them a gift, then go there now and have nothing to show for it *wink*

Well, after missing that and thinking in spurts about the whole week and what I was supposed to be doing if I knew what was good for me... I spent the whole day listening to music and just reading fanfiction. One of my ways of erasing from my mind what I was expected to complete or have a deadline at work and in other areas of my life this January 2009.

Instead of doing some reviews, studying or reading mail which I should have read last month am just..well, not minding anything.

So what?

I don't care.
I don't care.
I don't care what you think ...of me.

People can say manage your own work-life balance thingie. So far I've seen it to be balanced....oh yes indeedy. Its just work-work balance though not unless I force it to be otherwise.

While some people may be finishing up and ticking their New Year's resolutions for this year, I can't seem to work up any interest or energy at this point...I just want to swing to the other side of the pendulum, throw the papers away and let Fate fend for herself.

Let me be irresponsible for a while as it is nice to not think of duties and other serious stuff during weekends.

And in keeping with my mood...I keep singing these lyrics to myself this evening while the music plays on, with special emphasis on the words of "I don't care".

Fall Out Boy - I Don't Care Lyrics :

Say my name, and his in the same breath,
I dare you to say they taste the same,
Let the leaves fall off in the summer
And let December glow feel flames

Brace myself and let go,
Start it over again in Mexico
These friends, they don’t love you
They just love the hotel suites, now

I don’t care what you think
As long as it’s about me
The best of us can find happiness
In misery

Oh, take a chance, let your body get a tolerance,
I’m not a chance, but a heat wave in your pants
Pull a breath like another cigarette,
Palms up, I’m trading ‘em .. trading ‘em

I’m the oracle in my chest,
Let the guitar scream like a fascist,
Sweat it out, shut your mouth,
Free love on the streets, but
In the alley and I ain’t that cheap, now

I don’t care what you think,
As long as it’s about me
The best of us can find happiness
In misery

I don’t care what you think,
As long as it’s about me
The best of us can find happiness
In misery

Said-a, I don’t care just a-what you think,
As long as it’s about me, you said-a
I don’t care just what you think,
As long as it’s about me, you said-a
I don’t care (I don’t care)
You said I don’t care (I don’t care)
Said I don’t care,
I don’t care
I don’t care (I don’t care), I said-a
I don’t care

I don’t care what you think,
As long as it’s about me
The best of us can find happiness
In misery

I don’t care what you think,
As long as it’s about me
The best of us can find happiness
In misery

One of my fave 80's songs: Bette Davis Eyes

Along with some of Blondie's songs, I kept replaying this way back in the 80's on my old cassette recorder antique. By Kim Carnes, another singer-songwriter with the wonderful raspy voice, this pays tribute to Bette Davis, another old-era actress.

Her hair is Harlowe gold
Her lips sweet surprise
Her hands are never cold
She's got Bette Davis eyes
She'll turn her music on you
You won't have to think twice
She's pure as New York snow
She got Bette Davis eyes

And she'll tease you
She'll unease you
All the better just to please you
She's precocious and she knows just
What it takes to make a pro blush
She got Greta Garbo stand off sighs
She's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll let you take her home
It whets her appetite
She'll lay you on her throne
She got Bette Davis eyes
She'll take a tumble on you
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
She's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll expose you, when she snows you
Off your feet with the crumbs she throws you
She's ferocious and she knows just
What it takes to make a pro blush
All the boys think she's a spy
She's got Bette Davis eyes

And she'll tease you
She'll unease you
All the better just to please ya
She's precocious, and she knows just
What it takes to make a pro blush
All the boys think she's a spy
She's got Bette Davis eyes

She'll tease you
She'll unease you
Just to please ya
She's got Bette Davis eyes
She'll expose you, when she snows you
She knows ya
She's got Bette Davis eyes

I am posting this to try and erase from my mind some parodies of songs I've seen these last few..days.

YouTube - BEYONCE - SINGLE LADIES (PUT A RING ON IT) OFFICIAL VIDEO & LYRICS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU4uEWyRt_U
Sleeping late has its advantages, one turns on MTV, and gets updated on the new songs.

I found the tune very catchy-sounding and the dance is something I wish I was 20 years younger spry to do *grin*

The Morning which Marie Missed

For my travelling mate to Tagaytay Ellafitz/Marie.....as  promised....*wink*

December 7, 2008
Tagaytay, Philippines

there you go...be green with envy!

and all this you missed because you left after the Christmas party the night before - making it only Ladyairbus, Shutterblog and I snoozing the night and dawn away...

this is what you would have seen in the morning upon waking up to the cock-a-doodle-doo of a rooster and  the accompaniment of the chirping of crickets and croaking of frogs.

drool over fried garlic rice, divine beef tapa, salmon of BNK,  poached or fried eggs, native vinegar for dipping, hot chocolate, sliced and diced tomatoes, hot tea, and Ms G's customized shake to name a few breakfast items..

drool on and repent! bwahahaha!

breakfast conversation between me and
