While there may be other castelle cakes from other regions, it remains something associated with Nagasaki itself. As I've always liked pound cakes from my Sara Lee days, the kasutera for me was totally addicting (I loved the "matcha" or green tea ones) as it was light cake.
Here is a link I found which has pictures and a recipe: http://www.justhungry.com/2006/08/oyatsu_and_kasutera_castella_a.html
I was also taken with the colorful wrappings for these cakes...I've yet to download the picture I had taken of the green tea castella I had bought from Huis Ten Bosch. That one had a nice wrapping to it, while the other one I gave as pasalubong and which I promptly forgot to take a picture of beforehand. I will include it later and edit this post.
If I didn't have to go around from one station to another, I'd have bought a basket of these home with me as they were a perfect accompaniment to my very occasional cup of tea - be it English breakfast, oolong, green tea (yum, the layers of flavors!) or even milk tea which is already sweet. My weakness...*salivates*
You have to have at least 1 more person with you if you plan to dine on this kind of food - it may include dishes like sashimi, fish soup, seasonal delicacies which may be boiled, fried, vinegared etc. {picture in this page taken from another site was I was unable to book a reservation at one of the recommended restaurants}
We had to queue for
"Karasumi" or dried mullet roe is a seafood delicacy prized by gourmets. No comment since I hadn't eaten or seen it.
oh my gulay ang lami..babasahin ko mamaya..kakain ko lang eh..
ReplyDeleteI now really miss the cake now that I look at the picture again *double sigh*
ReplyDeleteBurpy.burpy. Food trip na naman Cat.
ReplyDeleteSir B, please don't remind me what other types of food I didn't eat or have not continued to eat don, now that I am back home....*cries a river of noodles*
ReplyDeleteCat, it is not surprising kung naubos mo yan! Saraap ng Japanese food. Love em.
ReplyDeleteKasutera looks very interesting. and for sure you went crazy chomping all the very fresh Japanese food you can get. yummmy!
ReplyDelete*grin* Joey, I take it you mean the kasutera..and not yung full-course meal...
ReplyDeletefreshness factor really is a very big plus...I was delighted with how crisp and tasty the vegetables were, the sunny-orange color of the egg yolks there, the food being stacked up in the groceries...the bread! (melon pan, here I come)......
ReplyDeleteyap. that's what i heard from friends who went in Japan. e.g. Mos burger. the same ingredients daw like those in S'pore. but the lettuce somehow tasted better. so crisp and fresh.
ReplyDeleteah! by accident napunta ako sa Mos Burger coz I was in a rush to catch the Kyoto Imperial Palace tour so no breakfast at all...afterwards, I saw the Mos Burger store and went in...
ReplyDeleteI was so hungry, I forgot that I didn't like chicken at all (except for the skin)...so when the order came in...I had no choice but to eat the burger and all the accompaniments.
Aba! ang sarap! crunchy nga ng lettuce (di kagaya ng namatay na na dalawang beses in some burger joints you have here, and I have not eaten Mos burger in Singapore)...and the meat was so tender, I could have gone eating one more...which is a surprise...
in fact, in all the eating that I did in this trip, I never had a bad moment...the rice was so good I was tempted to buy a kilo for my dad and myself as a treat, the Japanese sweets which I tasted were of a bewildering variety, the breads were also good, even the "commercialized" ones...abah..tataba ako don sa Japan if mag 1 year ako don...
the best talaga ang Japanese food. ;)>
ReplyDeletejapanese and italian or mediterranean cuisine for me!
ReplyDeletepero masarp din ang Filipino food....it just lacks presentation most of the time...and when you go to fiestas etc. nag pile up lang ang food sa plate parang halo-halo/sludge..hehehe..pero masarap pa rin...
I am always amazed by the packaging of Japanese food.
ReplyDeleteHehehe. Ako nga may nakatago pang Japanese packaging sa mahiwagang kahon ko. : )
ReplyDeleteako naman, ay nag take ako ng picture, before I opened it..sayang eh..pagkain..hehehehe...
ReplyDeleteI think its the right attitude..beautiful inside and outside...di lang content, but presentation...kaya nga naghanap ako ng libro about furushiki wrapping....a super helpful salesgirl in Nara even printed out for me the address, sketch and name of book as to where I could buy it in Nara..unfortunately, walang oras na kc malayo pa lakarin..
