Makati and Ortigas, Philippines
Mood: dreamy
Baptism. Who? "My spanking brand new baby daughter" - according to Albert, one of my ex-software devs. When? Saturday. Where? Batangas. Ayayay! A bit too far for me.
Instead, I went to the Open House of the Nihonggo Center. Instead of our Saturday class, this was the event that we would be attending.Arrived late after lunch. Didn't know a soul. Looked fun though. The kids certainly do know a good thing when they see one. I also queued up for the glitter tattoo even though I was the only "adult" one. I'd have gotten a seahorse one too if I wasn't in a hurry. The good luck character will just have to do instead of having two.
Missed the tea ceremony, origami sessions, amongst other things...
Instead of getting to watch those I was interested in, I stood witness to their sumo demonstration. Hmmm...I wonder if female sumo wrestlers would ever happen in my time.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For the past week, we have not been having the best weather. I was set to go to Ortigas for some educational-related stuff, as well as a chika-thon slash food trip schedule with my "tokayo'/namesake/classmate Catherine who I have not seen in a long time that October 1, which was also a holiday.
Instead, I had to reschedule for an October 4 slot in the afternoon
Earlier before I left my quarters, Marie (Ellaftiz) texted if I would like to join her when she would watch the 4:30 movie from the current Spanish film festival showing at Greenbelt. Regretfully, I instead texted back that I had to take a rain-check because I was going to Ortigas after my visit to the open house at Pasay Road (see event post earlier).
I had little time left to spare after leaving the Open House affair, but I was hungry. I felt lazy just thinking about going back home to cook and eat lunch. Instead, I stopped by Ole Spaghetti House in Glorietta.
I ordered the parma ham/walnut/cheese sandwich. The waiter came back after I was dreamily anticipating sinking my fangs into the sandwich. It was out of stock.
So instead I settled for tuna sandwich Italian-style. That and a rootbeer, and I felt half-human again :-)
I wanted to avoid irritating, boorish, and money-lusting taxi drivers.
Instead of that particular mode of transportation I took the MRT train, and arrived just in time to walk to the the corner of SMPC and Shangrila EDSA and to be soaked to the bone by the cold rain dumped by the dark, forbidding skies. I did not have a raincoat.
I had instead brought my umbrella, which wasn't really of much use under the circumstances. The wind was causing havoc with it and had ferociously lashed the water against my legs up to my shoulders. I swear the only part of me which was dryer than the rest of my body was the inside of my nostrils. *Sniffles and flares nostrils like a horse*
I straggled into the building and dripped water on the pristine floor. I took occupancy of the comfort room, and wrung out a basin of water from my pants, t-shirt, socks, hanky and hair (my undergarments were the type to dry out quickly). Luckily the air-conditioner was out, so I settled down for some brain-usage time and slowly dried out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was told that two of my fellow AVPs at a previous company would be meeting me for dinner that night at the Fort or Serendra. I instead harrumphed and said I would believe it when it had already happened ...since I knew that one of the ladies concerned has a tendency to plan but not push through. I was hopeful but skeptical.
I ended up instead planning to have dinner before going home as my friend was dieting. I walked to Shangrila Mall with him and just when we were to go our separate ways, someone called my name.
It was Marie! Of all places and of all times! Just when I was super hungry too. So that means that instead of meeting in Makati, we still did end up meeting today.
Instead of going for the other restaurants at the higher level, we ate at Secret Recipes restaurant at the aforementioned mall. Intriguing name.
Instead of cheesecake (they were supposed to have rave reviews for their cheesecake), I got tiramisu. Instead of their stew, I ordered fish and chips. Since Marie had to stay away from sugar, I slurped her ice tea instead of ordering any drinks for myself.
We were looking at each other ruefully - instead of being happy that we got to try out the place, we thought of not coming back in the future. Ever. As in. Never.
Why? Now that would be telling, so instead, I will be keeping it a secret (in keeping with the restaurant's name).
Instead of hanging out, having a beer, or coffee or some other dessert, I thought maybe we could watch a movie tomorrow from the filmfest because we both were unable to watch it today. So I caught the last train back to Ayala and Marie went on her way too.
I came home and multiplied. I found out from Marie's given links that there was still a 12 midnight showing of one more film.
I went to sleep instead.
I think it was for the best as another day was almost beginning too.
So, instead, I will ask you -
were your "instead" days as ordinary but wacky, wet and fun too?
Hi Cat! Sayang, di kayo nagkita ng anak kong si Ida. She's also taking up japalang and she was also there last Saturday. Well she did not get herself a "glitter tattoo." She thought it was just too juvenile for her. Maganda daw yung tea ceremony and origami session. Sayang, na-miss mo. She left right after the sumo demo nung mga bata.
ReplyDeleteay, dito pala yung lessons nya? sayang nga!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know the program kc, sinabi lang may open house, kung alam ko lang mornings yung ganon, I'd have made sure to go there even if bleary-eyed ako...
waaah! sayang nga di kami nagkita...masama pa naman sa post ko na we bumped into each other (as if kilalang-kilala nya ako ano hehehe)
naku, feeling juvenile pa rin ako dito *looks at tattoo*
ReplyDeletebuti di ko pinalagay sa mukha...
would you believe, after I had my turn, may nagpatatoo din na siguro fiftyish na babae..*grin*
Hahahaha...gotcha!
ReplyDeleteits my 2nd time ever pa tatoo...
ReplyDeletefirst was hennaed one during a christmas bazaar at AIM...I liked it and it was on my hand..parang vines...
ayoko naman ng permanent....at di kaya masakit yon?
pero gusto ko yung body paint...even if di ako ang lalagyan..I saw Sir B's book on it, sa Sports Illustrated...it was really nice to look at...
instead instead instead. nothing ever goes as planned =)
ReplyDeleteMarie, why? Are you diabetic? If not yet, I would like to share this with you – take two Apple Cider Vinegar tablets every time you eat (any meal or snack) and one 200 mcg tablet of Chromium once a day. These two substances are catalysts for the processing of sugars in our body. These are not medicines and do not have adverse side effects (well, sometimes a little hyperacidity with the Apple Cider Vinegar tabs). We can take in as much as 400 mcg of Chromium a day, but since we get it from other foods we eat, 200 mcg would be an optimum amount to take.
ReplyDeleteI found out about three weeks ago that Boboy's nephew, Tootsie Quemuel, was being tested for diabetes because he was having high blood sugar levels. I was dismayed to hear the news because he is only in his mid-30s. I was imagining the still long stretch of years he would face suffering from this prevalent – and dreaded – lifestyle disease. I immediately sent him Apple Cider Vinegar tablets and Chromium from my "botica" (actually my banggerahan of food supplements in the dining area of my home, hehe). He immediately started taking them and just today, I got this happy news that his blood sugar levels are down to normal! Tootsie wanted to know where he can buy the supplements.
These two supplements are available in most health food shops. But I get my supply from Healthy Options. Tip: just get plain Chromium. There are other chromium products like chromium picolinate, but these are relatively new and so might have adverse side effects that we have yet to find out. Plain chromium has been around for a long time with no adverse side affects recorded.
Winnowing from the instead, parang na-stalk ka ni Marie. Kwinkkwink! Destiny lang Cat. Eh kung sa States, nagkabangaan pa kayo ni Choie.
ReplyDeletetita thank you sa chromium tablet tip. i've tried apple cider vinegar and i was consistent with it for a while (i took brams, two tbsp before a meal) but it was so hard to sustain. nako concious ako sa amoy ng vinegar sa bag ko.
ReplyDeletei got back to taking oral meds dahil mas convenient. are cider tablets as effective? pano mo nalaman about this combination? its no fun having diabetes. sumpa talaga ito sumpaaa! huhuhu
Pasaway kasi akong pasyente kaya kung anu-anong gimik ang ginagawa ko, huwag lang akong mag-take ng maintenance meds. =(
ReplyDeleteHugz and I have been taking the Apple Cider Vinegar tabs and Chromium tabs for years and I think these have helped maintain our blood sugar levels at normal range. I first discovered these two supplements when I was doing the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet by Drs. Rachael & Richard Heller. I was a carb junkie and so, when I came across the tip about these two substances being carb catalysts, I immediately tried them. These two supplements are very popular with people trying to lose weight. Well, at least weight due to too much carbs, hehe.
I remember way back in 2002, I was in the US and as my wont when there, I would indulge on large servings of real American banana split. Oh, how I love this concoction! But unlike in the previous years when I would gain so many pounds because of this indulgence, I didn't gain a single pound that year because, as my sister put it – I had my magic pills with me (apple cider vinegar tabs & chromium). =)
yan lang pala ang sikreto. grrr
ReplyDeleteTootsie's mom, Hugz' older sister, is diabetic and taking maintenance meds already. When she saw the effect on Tootsie, she told me she will also start taking the supplements. But I cautioned her to first consult her doctor. This is because we do not know the actions of the meds she is taking. While by themselves not toxic, the two supplements might either exacerbate or contravene the meds' actions.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, if I were her, pasaway that I am, I would simply junk my meds and try this natural non-therapeutic way of taking the two supplements. Worst that can happen is that I would have have hypo- or hyper-glycemic attack. In which case, back to meds ako, hehe.
yeah mahirap na ang mga untested na combination.
ReplyDeletetita pag na hypo ka kain ka lang uli ng matamis. hehehe. diba yun ang antidote?
sana hypo nalang ako huhu
sometimes, meron ding lumulusot..but as I kidded my officemates, buti pa yung di plano, lumulusot...
ReplyDeletelike yung kay Che and Loo...di ba out of the blue?
(rhyme pa yan ha, take note!)
don't worry, even if di ka nakapunta, for every bite of the salad and cheese kinakin ko, you were in my thoughts :-)
syanga ano?
ReplyDeletehindi ba bragg?
ReplyDeleteYou mean the brand of organic foods, Bragg's? It also crossed my mind, but I thought baka meron ding Brams.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, for those of you who are sensitive to salt or have been told by your doctor to avoid salt or to lower your salt intake, Braggs Liquid Amino Acids is a great substitute. It is lighter than light soy sauce and organic to boot!
one probably gets used after some time if walang salt sa diet..i remember in my elementary or kaka-highschool ko lang ba...that I landed in the hospital dahil I got hepa..yung di naman serious na hepa...A ba yon?
ReplyDeleteanyways, nag jaundice ako etc. etc. and what I can remember from the hospital food is walang salt talaga...after a while nag-adjust na rin yung body ko and I found I could eat foods with no or low-salt...di naman ako nag-bleahh!
so practice lang siguro, but of course if one eats out, di mo naman siguro pwedeng orderin lahat no-salt na viands..
You are right, Cat. In fact, I find most processed foods and even restaurant food too salty for my taste now.
ReplyDeleteYears ago, the marketing guru Faith Popcorn predicted the trend for spicy food. She based her prediction on the perceived trend towards health-consciousness – low-fat, low-salt diets, etc. She said that spices would then rule in the absence of the taste enhancer salt & the tasty fats. Personally, I have discovered that a dash of pepper sans salt would already suffice to perk up my omelette. =)
ReplyDeletePatis rules!
ReplyDeletehmph..knorr seasoning with tabasco when it comes to daing na bangus.....
ReplyDeletealthough masarap if Rufina patis rin..hehehe...
teka...no-salty stuff nga pala...:-(
actually Ms. G, and I hope you don't mind my saying so....
ReplyDeletedi po ako nag-co-complain kc at this point naman in my life kumakain ako kung anong naka-setout sa lamesa coz food is a blessing maski super-flavoured pa yan...sayang eh...
medyo salty yung timpla last time I was there *wink*
i take bragg's apple cider vinegar in warm water every morning kasi po before i eat anything...
ReplyDeletejust came from healthy options today and got myself the apple cider tabs and chromium....hehehe!
Sorry about that, Cat. Although, hindi na ako yun (hehe, hugas-kamay agad, ano?) at si Emma na cook namin ang nagluluto. She must also be getting on in years. =(
ReplyDeleteTrivia: as we grow older, our taste buds get to be less sensitive to salt. Thus, we would tend to make our food saltier as we grow older. That is why, when I cook nowadays, I stop short of tasting the salt coz I know that if the saltiness is just right for me, then it is too salty already.
Boboy's mom is a great cook. But in the last five years or so, her maid/caregiver would watch out carefully how much patis or salt Mama Bes would put in what she is cooking.
That's great, Meann! They really work. =)
ReplyDeleteTrue, specially processed foods. And the problem is, the sodium content is masked by other flavors.
ReplyDeleteI find that Pinoy food is salty, or let me rephrase it, Pinoys love salty food. Lots of patis, bagoong, toyo in our dishes.
Only works on Pinoy dishes. Salt and pepper works on anything.
ReplyDeleteIsn't daing na bangus salty already? Dadagdagan mo pa ng Knorr, which is basically flavored salt or patis, Tepok na.
ReplyDelete:-) Ms. G di naman po to the point na my eyeballs pop out of their sockets..hehehe...
ReplyDeleteI was just commenting on it, and certainly not complaining po so I hope you don't mind my posting that...
I had the stray thought kc that while people do try their best to stay healthy with moderation in their food intake and in the addition of salt, sometimes we cannot avoid it sa restaurants...and then, dun din pala sa bahay mismo natin.
we all have different levels of acceptance for salt and sugar...hence if I ever get home to Cebu, my mom knows that she better cook na matabang sa akin, then just give dad the salt shaker hehehe...or the sugar container...para to each his own taste na nga...di ba safer...
my dad, ever since bata pa sya, grabe na yung tamis and salt na hinihingi nya sa food..which weirdly enough wala pa *knock on wood* namang epek sa health nya...looking at him eat and sometimes sampling his foods parang nalulunok ako sa level hehehe...
usually kc when I have fish, there's not much salt in it, so kaya pa naman...
ReplyDeleteif I do go to restaurants or like yung before sa Chowking nalang ako kumain ng bangus (di kc kami makaluto sa dorm), di ko na nilalagyan ng sawsawang patis/toyo...just the hot sauce (coz I love hot sauce)...
from Ms. G's post on Sir B's mom being a good cook, naalala ko tuloy lola ko...
ReplyDeletesa province kc sya (about 50 or more kms outside of Cebu City) and both my parents and I remember her cooking fondly...weirdly, di ko maalala that she tasted much her cooked food..parang nasa-isip ko she just throws the salt around hahaha!
and...it turned out all-right...I call it the "mata-mata" strategy (literally eye-eye meaning sa mata lang nya na-me-measure)...
and one more thing...even if salt lang ang flavor nya sa dishes nya (kc may mga kung anong seasoning tayo these days right? at kung ano-ano herbs and spices pa nilalagay natin)...that particular condiment was enough to make her dishes taste delicious!
haaay..home cooking ng kaninu-nu-an talaga..:-)
He is one lucky dude! It's in his genes. Sarap naman niya, inggit ako, hehe. =)
ReplyDeletehmm...baka nag-cancel out lang ang ultra-high amounts of both salt n sugar hehehe!
ReplyDeleteSabi ko na nga ba healthy ang champoy eh! LOL!
ReplyDeleteSalt, the universal flavor enhancer, and it's all you need.
ReplyDeleteok, so champoy diet? anyone?...
ReplyDeleteanyone?...hello?
*grin*
sana nga..pero sa daming mga news on what is bawal, turning out to be good..or sometimes what we think as good and healthy, di rin pala maganda..
ReplyDeleteewan...di na ako masyadong nag-mind...next thing I know they will tell me rice is bad to eat...hmmmph...
Ako rin, skeptical na ako sa mga bawal bawal. Basta kainin mo ang gusto mo, and in moderation, OK lang yon. At least enjoy ka. I love all kinds of food (magkasundo tayo sa bagay na yon) pero I control yung intake. I don't like salty stuff but use salt for flavoring, pero konti lang. I can eat tuyo pero di palagi kasi masyadong maalat. You know where I could lose control? Sa mga desserts.
ReplyDeleteok lang yon :-)
ReplyDeleteyou only have one life to live on this earth, and its not so bad losing control over desserts...basta in moderation din yung lose control hehehe...
kaysa mag-road rage pa ang tao or mag-guerra..abah, mas ok yata sabihin, kumain ka na lang dyan...
and not to analyze too much about the enjoyment you take out of such simple and basic things in life...yummmm!!
bramms nga yata. basta yung klase na may sediment sa bottom tapos old school yung label.
ReplyDeletecuh888 and bananaking69 natawa ako sa exchange nyo. ako walang control sa desserts, look where it got me. huhuhu
count me in, mahilig din ako sa kahit anung food, maski fine dining or galing sa kanto basta masarap =)
Hey, Cat. I like that red tattoo on your skin at bagay din sa suot mo. =]
ReplyDeleteWelcome to the club Ella.
ReplyDeletethank you :-)
ReplyDeletena-ka-ka-conscious lang kc sabi ni Chito yung daughter nya found it a bit juvenile..hehehe...
sabagay parang juvenile naman ako palagi..hmmmm
