Hungry for more in June

I'm a tickled pink foodie-lover slash amateur photographer today.

How so?

During a visit to Cafe Breton at Cliff House, Tagaytay to devour dessert with a group of good friends, I took a stab at two lovely crepes placed on the table.

Anybody who has the good fortune to share a meal with Multipliers like us knows its a rule of thumb not to eat right away when food is displayed enticingly in front of half-starving people. No matter how hungry one is, one must always wait for the last click of cameras taking pictures for posterity of edible and luscious food. *nods head sagely*

This June 2009, Shutters, the photography club I signed up for in HP had its monthly challenge.
I don't usually participate in the challenges because I either forget, do not have the opportunity or just don't like the pics I have come up with.

This time though, thanks to this Tagaytay trip to attend Sir B's birthday bash and one-man show, I was presented with the chance to shoot food after my initial hunger was somewhat satisfied.

Photography + food = happy cat!

This month's challenge: Shoot with a narrow DOF (depth of field) emphasizing on the essential elements of the dish. Make us crave for that jpeg!

When the deadline for the submission of entries came, I remembered the crepes photo I had and submitted it under point-and-shoot category (the other one was of course SLR which I obviously could not compete in). The photos we submit do not undergo editing or retouch at all but must be “as is” at the time it was taken. I think its better that way.

I received an email this afternoon from the club.

Funnily enough, I won.

for those with flickr accounts, it can also be seen here:

.....and I entitled it "Crepe 2 Crepe". The "Hungry for More" was the tagline of the challenge.

  1. I will include the photo in this blog when I switch to my personal laptop as I don't have a copy at this time.

Note - personally I don't think its the best food pic I have taken at all, but since it was the most recent (taken in June), and I had more DOF than the other entries (not that there were a hundred hehehe), it was good timing I had chosen to submit it and contributed to its being chosen.

  6. Congratulations Cat,

I'm looking forward to seeing that winning photo of those crepes. You're so right about the need to photograph food no matter how hungry before indulging. My wife is always reminding me how crazy I am taking pictures of food and how it is getting cold as I click. Well, we need to preserve the moment and share with our fellow Multipliers.

    Take care.

  9. this is no false modesty ha..

but in my opinion the pic I have is not super mouth-watering photo..the fact is, when I saw that it wasn't that many entries, I just took the chance and submitted it...

I think if the crepes we had ordered had more contrasting colors and backgrounds, it would have been more interesting as a final product...*sigh* at least...lesson learned..

  13. thanks Ted.

your food pics are lovely and always make me happy looking at them and wondering if I will get the chance to sample such dishes if I could visit the restos you've featured.

if only the smell of the food could be captured also by the photograph itself, then it could be perfect!

  14. hehe...I already ate it..so I can't put it out for you...

    ReplyDelete
  15. ah yes..did I mention there is a new tradition?

those who win ought to be treated by friends and relatives as prize....hehehe!

  16. hi Nonz..I added it to this just now...as I had to look for it..I have 2 photos na very similar...so I first had to check in flickr and take a guess which one it was I had submitted...

I am a realistic person, so don't worry if there is something to criticize on the picture...I can take it. I was surprised and didn't vote myself on the June challenge.
My yardstick when looking at the entries was - did it make me hungry looking at it...unfortunately it could have been because I had eaten but it actually just made me feel full...hehehe...

  47. nothing really, something has happened starting yesterday which might mean, I have to take time off from Multiply for another few days...:-(

    ReplyDelete
  48. eehhee...sorry Che, but this was I think the La Pinay of Pearl, and my own crepe order which I can't remember the name of.

the blueberry crepe which you and Loo shared wasn't part of this shot (I wanted to, believe me) because it didn't look very similar to these 2 crepes, so gusto ko parang magkapatid na crepes, unlike your crepe order which was more sosyal (ergo mas complicated looking)...

    ReplyDelete
  49. yes, there might yet be an octopus crepe just around the corner from you Tunde :-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. No, these aren't octopuses. They are alien blobs, surfing in their personal saucer mopeds. ^_^ Nice shot, Cat!

    ReplyDelete
  51. that was pretty imaginative Ms. G :-)

and now, I think I shall stay off crepes for a while after imagining that I might be eating alien blobs.....uhm.....
