In the midst of a "toxic" week, I found happiness in simple things - I discovered lychee concentrate in my usual haunt, I found a big bottle of Kirin Milk Tea (which I can't usually find in the grocery store) and a big bottle of Goma (Japanese salad dressing) which for the last couple of months was always out of stock. Now, if I can just find that pesky Mabuti sardines....it would be perfect for my Pokka green tea...

i wish you find your Mabuti sardines, i haven't seen one yet either!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with those sardines.
ReplyDeleteBTW: Goma (胡麻) just means sesame in Japanese. I love goma dressing, too. There is also goma butter for toast, which can be quite delicious if you find a good brand.
We used to order the Mabuti sardines there in Pinas or sometimes in LA. Lucky for us, we can buy them now here at Pacific Supermarket.
ReplyDeletebtw, Mabuti sardines still tops my list. I think you can now pull the top to open it. I used to use a butter knife to pry open that can of sardines. But its worth every turn..he he he.
ReplyDeleteHaven't tried Goma salad dressing. We have a Japanese salad dressing here from Gyotaku. Perhaps it's the same. We also love that stuff.
ReplyDeleteI used to make a lychee drink out of Lychee concentrate. If I remember correctly, the brand we used to get was from Amoy canning, from Hongkong. I am sure there are other brands available now. That's good stuff. Lots of sugar nga lang. But I don't mind. I'll consider that an energy drink..LOL.
ReplyDeleteThanks Meann...I bet if I was back in Cebu, I'd find it in Robinson's Supermarket near Fuente...but here, hmmmph..not even in Rustan's...
ReplyDeletethanks Ted...
ReplyDeletegoma butter? hey, I've never tasted that...I kind of miss kaya already...and now I find out there's goma butter...
oh, all these lovely things to eat...
how much does it cost there Joey?
ReplyDeletehahaha...sorry, sorry..but I was going to ask, what year ka nag start in eating Mabuti?
ReplyDeletecoz, the version I have here (and which I always remember) has that "key" you slide into the protruding lip on top of the can, and you can twist it backwards so you can roll and open the can...
this is basically sesame salad dressing...its brownish in color and has those speckled looking sauce...
ReplyDeleteI found a picture in photobucket..which I also tried..but maybe one of these days, I will just take a picture of what I usually buy here...(close-up pa)
lychee shake is something I really like to drink...
ReplyDeleteam almost satisfied with the drinks I have here...but I haven't been able to find any barley drink packets...mmmm..its also delicious..first tried it in a Chinese restaurant in Singapore
Not all the "goma butter" I've tried is good. A lot of hit and miss.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a real joy to find things that sometimes were forgotten or just not so important on those times...usually, during crisis you'll somehow find something as a special treat to your advantage...good for you...it's true sometimes happiness comes when not expected...that's the best of know where & when...chow na tayo..hehehe
ReplyDeleteso, does it taste almost the same as the dressing? or is it sweet? what brand did you like the best?
ReplyDeleteI think it is about $2.50 per can or more. Magkano ba dyan ang Mabuti sardines? Do you know that they are made in Portugal?
ReplyDeleteI've been eating Mabuti sardines since I was a kid. Ganun din yung binibili namin noon. May "key" din na i insert mo sa protruding lip and slide backwards. Kailangan gamitan ng butter knife yun para ma open all the way. Spoon or fork does not cut it. Bumabaluktot. Siguro ikaw malakas ang mga kamay mo. You don't need to use butter knife. Lately, the ones we buy now has that pull tab and then you just pull it backwards and it's open. How convenient.
Masubukan nga next time kung may makita akong lychee concentrate.
ReplyDeletemga Php 160 or 180 ba yon..I usually close my eyes when I pay for it...hahaha!
ReplyDeleteeh? our spoons were ok naman...
ReplyDeletenowadays, I just use the swiss knife to brace that part...
*envious* I haven't tried that pull-tab...baka US lang na version..hehe..
the best lychee version of a shake I had was in Zamboanga...*nostalgic pose*
ReplyDeleteMagaling nga ang swiss army knife. Pure stainless steel yun kaya talagang uubra.
Have you ever tried using fresh lychees? Kaya siguro masarap yung sa Zamboanga. Or maybe, they used canned lychee including the juice or syrup in the can. Siguradong patok yan. Now I feel like making one pero wala akong lychees ngayon. Maybe next June or July when fresh lychees are in huge abundance here. We usually buy them by as much as 30 lbs. Huge ones, very meaty and the seeds are small. They are called Kaimana lychees grown in Hilo.
ReplyDeleteNo matter what cost, it is worth it, di ba?
ReplyDeletewell, got to be honest..if this was 200 Pesos plus, I'd think about it.
ReplyDeleteWhile I love to eat, I gotta be practical..most of the time if I can taste it at least once, or I can afford sometimes and indulge in it infrequently, it makes me happy. I bet if this was something at 20 pesos lang per can, I'd not enjoy it half as much.
There is a certain charm in treasuring something precious (or in this case expensive ehehehe) and celebrating its scarcity by just indulging in it once in a blue moon...
for fresh lychees, direcho na fruit ako..not for shakes or anything else.
ReplyDeleteay..I can remember that yellow can of lychees galing China..hahaha! and no I don't buy it...I only try fresh fruit, or eto, concentrate but I check where its made...and I don't indulge much in restaurants coz they may use the canned lychee...ngeeh!
hmm.I wonder if may lychee cake? lychee pie? lychee pudding...lychee butter...lychee soda...lychee...
uhmm...I bet msarap fruits dyan sa Hawaii...if you do make one, and since i haven't seen big lychees..please do post a pic :-)
ReplyDeleteAko rin, of course.
ReplyDeleteDo you have the recipe for Lychee shake?
ReplyDeleteI believe I do have photos of those lychees. I'll have to find them.
ReplyDelete..and ang ingredients ay madali lang (e mas maganda sana if may lychee ice cream..pero I don't think I've ever seen one)
Ingredients:
10 to 12 - lychees, peeled, deseeded
2 glass - chilled wholefat milk
1 tbsp - sugar
1 or 2 drops - vanilla essence
Method
1. Chop two lychees very fine, refrigerate, keep aside till required.
2. Put remaining lychees in an electric blender, add sugar.
3. Run till a smooth paste is formed.
4. Add milk, run till well blended and frothy.
5. Pour into individual glasses, which have been chilled already.
6. Top with a few pieces of chopped lychees.
7. Serve chilled.
if ever, try mo kaya dollop of vanilla ice cream or goat's milk?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the recipe Cat. And Yes, we do have Lychee Ice Cream here from Bubbies. I'll give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteWhat's this word?
ReplyDeleteOK, I got it na. Medyo na disoriented ako.
ReplyDeleteeh? its so unfair...why don't we have lychee ice cream here?
ReplyDelete*whispers* I usually add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to any shake or concoction I try to make after my first attempt
aiyah! sorry Joey, maybe its not used much..kc hindi dollop for you..but whole container *wink*
ReplyDeletehehe..I couldn't resist,,,
Cat, sige, punta ka dito treat kita ng one gallon of lychee ice cream, Promise:-)
ReplyDeleteYa right!
ReplyDeleteonce I found the milk tea and the goma in the Japanese grocery (here at Little Tokyo),
ReplyDeleteeto ang nangyari sa akin...
Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk!!
ReplyDeleteKung sa bandang June or July makakasama ang fresh lychee fruits:-) You're welcome po.
ReplyDeletePapaano ba mag paste ng photos dito?
ReplyDeleteehehehe!
ReplyDeletewaaah..may promo pal to LA and Sanfo..pero..mga lagpas 700 USD din..huhuhu....
ReplyDeletebut first, you have to put your photos somwhere on the web...like yung sa photobucket, or it could be here also in Multiply, then make sure its an album accessible to you...
in a nutshell its like this but without the space between:
< and img and...
src and equal sign and
equal sign and the pathname in quotation marks
< img src = "pathname" >
where pathname is the path of where your photo is located...and it must be enclosed in quotation marks when you equate it to the IMG SRC instruction
1. you must know the path where the photo is located...
right click on the photo you loaded, then look under Properties..you can usually see the location or path where its stored
2. embed that path in the html code above
its a bit difficult to put an example here because you wont' be able to see the whole thing but the picture itself...
on another note, what I keep forgetting is how to put a link but not show the link itself but something else like a sentence saying so...
ReplyDeleteexample.."Look at the picture of the animal on the Zoo Animals webpage."
and the "Zoo Animals webpage" in the sentence will be seen, not the actual link..but when you click on that coz its underlined, it will go to the page...
Hay Naku. This has gone over my head. Di bale. Bagong post na lang ang gagawin ko.
ReplyDeleteTeka muna, I noticed na if you post several pictures, now we have to upload them one by one. Why is that happening now unlike before where you can upload a whole bunch of photos. Nakakatakamad na tuloy:-(
Another one that's has gone over my head:-))
ReplyDeleteKaya mo yan, Cat.
ReplyDeleteeh? I don't have that problem...nandon pa rin ako sa bunch of photos to be loaded where you just dragged and drop...
ReplyDeleteI just checked now.. coz earlier today I loaded also a big batch..yung when Che and I arrived in Bejing airport, and we went to Tian'an Men Square...
then a couple of minutes ago, I tried the batch upload of photos again for our stay at a nice courtyard hotel..check mo kaya Joey...baka Mac nag strict :-)
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha... may kasamang libreng tour yan:-)
ReplyDeletetry another computer or browser...
I think pwedeng mag upload ng multiple photos.
ReplyDelete......na malapit sa Beaches and tourist spots...:-)
ReplyDeleteayos...am using Firefox 90% of the time :-)
ReplyDeleteat saka volcano..ehehe...
I don't play with 'em...:-)
ReplyDeleteah..I disabled online chat for Multiply...di kc sya same as YM na may Invisible pag login eh...
ReplyDeleteI prefer in Multiply to post, leave it and see what happens later...online chat I think is ok in Facebook...kc bilisan lang...
Yung chat sa Multiply is almost the same as FB, bilisan din lang, though I rarely use it even on FB or even Gmail. It is a good feature though.
ReplyDeletemaybe demanding as a user of Multiply, but if chat is going to be included, I'd prefer something in the lines of Yahoo Messenger and more...hehehe...
ReplyDelete*binatukan ng Multiply admin, aray!*
I've only tried using YM perhaps, once or twice. I have yahoo email but I hardly use it. I think I've chatted with you once on that, didn't we? I am not picky about chats. I'll use anything that pops us...gmail, ym, FB or Multiply.
ReplyDeletere this Joey, which I re-read...you mean, chat in Multiply using Mozilla as browser - di mo nakikita usually ang chat feature?
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried Safari in any pc
Yes, I don't.
ReplyDeleteSafari is only available to Apple users.
