Genre: Science Fiction & Fantasy
The movie is a brainchild of noted director James Cameron - it is a no-brainer for me to conclude that this is one of the best and worthy-of-every-peso-I-paid films I've seen this year (and hey! watching this movie on a spur-of-the-moment decision sure got rid of my "New Moon" blah-ness!).

As fond as I am of action/adventure slash science-fiction films, this movie also earns extra kudos for its underlying and timely "environmental" message but even more so for its being a tribute to one of my favorite sayings - "Imagination is more important than knowledge...."

Truly, the brain behind the creation of such a vibrant, colourful world of Pandora - with all its fantastic creatures, coupled with scenes upon scenes of the environment of this moon (of the gas giant Polyphemus), which in turn brought to my mind visions of a lush Amazonian forest multi-layered with a palette of light and colors from an underwater world - I can only be in awe. It was in early 2006 wherein Cameron developed the script, the language, and the culture of Pandora - and once you see it displayed in all its breathtaking grandeur on the big screen, I am sure you would be amazed also at his literally out-of-this-world imagination and highly-creative output.

Luckily, the current technology and computer-generated imagery techniques available has certainly gone a long way from those old days of stop-motion clay animation (with apologies to Gumby). "Avatar" is estimated to have cost about half a billion dollars - over $300 million to produce, and another estimated $200 million for the distribution and other costs. This film is touted as a breakthrough in terms of filmmaking technology, for its development of 3D viewing and stereoscopic filmmaking with cameras that were specially designed for the film's production. The movie is a hybrid with a full live-action combined with computer-generated characters and live environments.

Some films make up for a simple plot with eye-popping action scenes...others churn out a mental labyrinth of a story with straightforward story-telling devoid of visual effects. But sitting through approximately 3 hours of this movie, I felt that it was a refreshing blend and balance of such diametric film-making approaches.

A definition first before I plunge into the world of Pandora. What does the title refer to?

An "Avatar" is a genetically-engineered human-Na'vi hybrid used for interaction with the indigenous natives of Pandora. A human who shares genetic material with the avatar can be mentally linked to it, allowing them to control its functions and experience what it experiences, while their own body sleeps in a chamber which allows the neural connection with the avatar.

The storyline in the most simplistic description I can give is this:

**** WARNING: SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD ****
.....
.....

The protagonist is paraplegic former U.S. Marine Jake Sully who ends up taking his twin brother's place in the Avatar Program when the latter dies. Off our Jake goes to Pandora, the home of the Na’vi, an indigenous sentient humanoid race who are considered primitive by human standards. The Na'vi live in harmony with their unspoiled world, which the humans have found to be rich with Unobtainium, a very valuable and expensive mineral.

So here's conflict #1: Unobtanium's richest deposits are unfortunately resting underneath the Na'vi's "HomeTree" and big surprise! the military-corporate entity mining the planet for this mineral want those deposits at all costs. In fairness though, with the Avatar program, a faction of the humans on Pandora do try to befriend and learn the culture of the Na'vi ...(and am being hard-boiled but I reason out that some higher-ups just really want to "persuade" the natives to relocate)...it is only later that the bad guys do blast the "HomeTree" to perdition. Oops..I didn't mean to give that obvious development away :-)

Through a series of events, Jake Sully (or more accurately, his avatar) fortuitously ends up in the Na'vi people's Omaticayan tribe with Neytiri, the young Na'vi female who first tries to kill him when he is left behind in the dangerous forest after his thrilling encounter with some sensitive plants and a few territorial and fearsome wildlife. Later on she rescues him due to some timely floating seeds from one of their sacred trees/deity. Neytiri ends up being ordered by the tribe's leaders (incidentally her parents) to teach Jake the ways and customs of their tribe.

This is now a slippery diving platform for conflict #2 to flourish: both Jake and Neytiri develops romantic feelings for each other over the course of Jake's training. When Jake gets exposed later for what he has known will happen if he could not persuade the Na'vi to move from their home - the exposure is also after he and Neytiri have mated - not only is the mandatory dramatic scene inserted, but it gets mixed up with lots of ka-bhoom! and ka-baam! from the "Sky People"'s (another name for us greedy humans) military bombardment of the Omaticayan's home and surrounding environment resulting in horrendous loss of lives, and not just of the Na'vi.

I had a few toenail-biting moments as I was wondering what unearthly twist Cameron could introduce into the story to ensure that the Na'vi with all their "primitive" bows and arrows, even with their strong connections to the justifiable sentient trees and wild creatures, could fight and have a believable win against the mighty firepower and destruction wrought by the humans. I was also thinking madly of ideas on how these lovers of different races could end up living happily ever after with each other (a 3-meter tall, slender and blue-skinned female Na'vi lovingly cradling a gasping, nearly-dying disabled human male on her lap? uhhmm....)

There was an overflowing plateful of enjoyable movie morsels which all resulted in a very "marketable" yummy movie package

we have Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldaña (she portrayed the young Uhura from Star Trek, the 2009 movie), Michelle Rodriguez for starters as part of the cast and let us not forget Sam Worthington too (quite worthy being cast in his pivotal role);

we have kaboodles of seat-gripping close views of the Na'vi way of life (that rite of passage for Na'vi warriors was pulse-stopping); as well as the expected fight and action scenes;

we have a heap of majestically floating mountains/islands and ethereal scenery and the Pandoran creatures are numerous and varied enough but still familiar and quite helpful in the end;

There's the Good versus Bad formula (that Colonel Miles sure is a coldblooded meanie! and makes for a perfect I-love-to-hate antagonist though he's no parody), a sub-formula of Big Corporation versus the indigenous Na'vi...then the miracles do happen hossanahs!...hey, what's not to gobble up...er..I mean enjoy?

Oh, and just to be fair, there were a few cons for me too - but it had mostly to do with some predictable story twists. I guessed these, a by-product of my sometimes too-critical-with-movies and logical brain but in the end, I would still say - go out and watch this now as it is certainly suited for a Christmas season feel-good movie. We all love such cheer these cool December days :-)

With a couple more sequels on its way...what can I say - I will be seeing you later!

  6. I watched it at Glorietta 4 on Saturday...

with my overactive imagination, I reasoned I didn't need shell out P300 (if GB3) for going to the 3-D version..besides I was thinking if 3-D mas ok sana if don sa MOA and it was already too far and too late me and and my college classmate Peping to run to (e we had made a pact to have a drinking spree pa after the movie so baka di na kaya with the schedule hehehe!)

My review above is deliberately simplistic...there's a wealth of material and ideas in the movie which could be food for thought or debate...but I have purposely not included my other opinions and also have not fleshed out the conclusion, in the hopes that other movie-goers will thoroughly enjoy the suspense and denouement..

  7. ok, but well...you don't need to worry, I've not let the cat out of the bag so to speak *grin*...I've not included the conclusion :-)

  8. haha...I didn't get one...but its proof enough how splendid the movie was....that even if it wasn't the 3-D version I saw...I thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn't have minded riding some of those fierce creatures myself (I got a kick of how the bond and communication between rider and horse/bird/etc. came about)

  10. hi Val...akala ko nga tapos na manonood kayong nasa NA continent hehehe...

this is the first movie I've seen in a long time, wherein I didn't read reviews ...or even knew the story before I watched the movie...hahaha..akala ko nga before it had something to do with an anime na may avatar din sa title (pero shempre iba pala)....

come back after you've seen the movie and share with me please how you found it...

  11. :-) I was already content with seeing it on the big screen...even if di 3-D...and I was thoroughly satisfied with all the aspects that I didn't even rue not reviewing it or doing a "replay"

  12. The movie press were saying that Avatar is where the future of movie-making is going.
From the trailers, this movie is incredibly breathtaking with its cinematography and special effects.
(You could make a very good movie reviewer/critic.) :-)

  13. Thanks Mar!

...I was still bleary-eyed (and chinky-eyed) after all the beers I consumed, and in the harsh light of day with only 3 hours of sleep..I was annoyingly not able to go back to sleep.

I had awoken early and a bee was in my bonnet about this film. I wanted to egg on the rest of my friends and online buddies here to go out, see this movie and gasp in amazement at how film-making has become. We are so lucky to be alive these days in order to witness such advances in technology...and of course to people who can come up with such stories!

Oh yeah, I did hear from my bud Peping (who was the cause of my going to watch this), how Cameron waited for a couple of years to translate his Avatar story so that technology could catch up.

There are still some scenes where it seemed to me to be too "smooth" and obviously a computer-generated scene but, I'm sure given time, the day will arrive when we can't even be sure if what we are seeing are live-action or just products of computer software.

If you are interested in some CGI animation (even if you don't see the whole film), you might like to get a glimpse of the first "pure" one I saw years and years ago - it's tile was "Vandread". It doesn't have live action though, but at that time I was in a jaw-drop mode of how smooth and seamless everything seemed to be.

From wiki: Vandread (ヴァンドレッド, Vandoreddo) is a Japanese anime series directed by Takeshi Mori and created by Gonzo and Media Factory animation studios. Vandread, as a science fiction space opera, combines elements of action, romance, ecchi, comedy, and mecha. Vandread presents a mix of comedy ranging from slapstick humor to subtle humor. It also utilizes well-animated characters and cleanly rendered CG action sequences (I came from Ranma 1/2 and other old animes so it really looked different to me how Vandread was done).

It was funny at first, because I thought it was more like gender war (men and women do not live on the same planet) but as the story progressed, I found out that it was (as most stories are) a complicated history behind the men and women's segregation. And it actually has moral lessons and a nice soundtrack too (well, maybe its just me being overly fond of anime again hehe!)

  15. Hi Cat,

I am so looking forward to this movie! The movie opens on Tuesday here. It is nice to read that this isn't just another futuristic action film as Cameron's other SF flicks have been.

I didn't read past the spoiler alert, but I do have a question more about film craft than plot. Is this one of those 3D movies where directors feel the need to make objects look like they are flying at your face every few minutes? I hate that. I recently watched Disney's 'A Christmas Carol,' which as is typical with Disney went far from the original story mostly to add scenes that must have been eye popping in 3D, but were probably not even slightly in the imagination of Charles Dickens. So please tell me they didn't just throw in scenes that only have the purpose of showing off the 3D.

    Take care.

dito sa NA medyo pag ganitong Blockbuster ay wait muna ako kasi today I was about to see nga eh grabe at sold agad lagi at haba ng pila kaya I went too see na lang 2012 which is not bad at all..Kaya me Project ako ..Gagawa na rin ako ng ARKO ni KYUT..sama kayo..ha ha ha

Pero I will for sure na panonooring ko talaga ito saka sa big screen kasi mas maganda talag pati surround sound..'m sure na ma enjoy ko ito sa trailer pa lang sa You Tube ok na sa akin lalu na sa Theater pa.. :)

  18. do it right the first time...proceed to the 3D version para mas enjoy nyo :-)

and when you get out of the movie theater..thats where dadagsa ang mga Mano Pos

  19. konnichiwa Ted!

No, all the computer generated actors and environments and creatures looked "normal" (i.e. they are not trying to get into your eyeballs 50% of the time hahaha!)

The film's editing was good...I am a restless person and sitting for 3 hours? perish the thought.

But though there were special effects, to me they were not overpowering to the point that you forget the development of the characters..especially Jake's (poor guy, never able to get a rest hehehe) and even computer generated ones..

Abangan ko na lang clear copy sa Arlegui. Mas masarap kc manood sa bahay habang nakahiga ka.

e ito nga sabi ni Lito na dapat 3D...so you have to go to the Big Screen (wag mo nang ipa-obvious gano ka kabata if Clover Theater pa yun...*grin*)

yung 3D version sa Greenbelt and Glorietta...Php 300.00.

E baka yung shades nila, bring-home-mable...pwede mo pa gawing souvenir...

may choice ka if they attempt to have it returned:

    a) magpanggap ka that you were not given one "ewan ko sa yo miss, pero wala akong natanggap maski cardboard na shades"

    b) take a macho stance and say "anoh ba kayo ha? ang mahal nga..tapos babawiin nyo pa?!" kaso if may sikyu..e mag-evaporate ka na lang bigla....

    hehehe!

  37. G4 C3 3D P300 H14 & H15 1910 and 5S. Eto yung mga codes na nasa-isip ko ngayon habang nina-namnam ko pa ang isang tunay na kahindik-hindik na pelikulag Avatar. Napanood ko sa Glorietta 4 (G4), Cinema 3 (C3), in Three-Dimensional cinematography (3D), seats H14 and H15 yung upuan namin ni Cecill and the movie started at 7:10 PM or 1910 hrs in military lingo. The P300 is for the 300 pesos it cost per seat. And finally, I give a Five Stars rating (5S) for what, in my opinion, is an excellent presentation that has perhaps pushed the envelope of film-making with the use of cutting-edge SFX technology via CGI done by Lucas Films, and handled superbly by the genius of director James Cameron. I think this is the kind of film that will define the next generation in animated movies.

On a personal note, I think I like the idea of having a video-blog just like Jake Sully (the lead male character).

    P.S.
If it were on IMAX, it would have probably totally blown me away. By the way, for an additional 100 pesos, you can view it at IMAX either at SM MoA or at SM City, that is if traffic is not a concern for you.

Thanks again for the review, Cat.

  38. Di na naman nakaka-hilo. Medyo nag improve na rin yung design ng 3D glasses since the King-kong movies :-). Noon kasi cardboard at red and green plastic ang gamit. Ngayon, parang dark glasses (shades) na ang design. So no problem with eating before viewing it. Ang iba nga kumakain pa habang nanunood.

  39. Actually, the theater allows some time for the staff to wipe the 3D glasses with a sanitation solution kaya kung minsan mahaba ang pila sa labas ng cinema.

  40. I believe the movie was entitled "District 9." Kung meron man na medyo mahirap sa tiyan dun were the gory scenes, not the 3D effect. Masyadong bloody yung mga labanan doon. But if you were a Wang Yu fan (bloody Chinese movies of the 60s and 70s), di ka mahihirapan sa mga eksena ng District 9.

  41. I was going to watch kanina the last full show at Glorietta 4...hay..di pa rin pala tayo mag-abot ...no I didn't push through because I got stuck as usual dito sa work, work, work...

let's see... if my money (160) before plus 300 now..lampas Imax na...nevermind...I swear to myself next time na lang ako mag-3D...if we weren't just pressed for time, we could have tried the MOA IMAX...

oh well, at least I do owe my college classmate the idea of watching this here in Manila...

thanks Chito for coming back and making your opinion known..I'm glad that ok ang review ko tapos you enjoyed it naman (it would have been sad forme if you didn't like it and I liked it a lot)...hehehe..teka...may negative reviews ba tong movie na to?

what is missing is that like at Enchanted Kingdom, pati yung seats mag-move....with matching blowing or air in our faces or spray of water (hmm...wala yata itong eksenang to ah..more like fire and heat)

  44. pwede rin ba tayo magdala ng sanitation spray para mas mabilis tayo makapasok? *clean-eyed look*

  45. ayos...I rely on Chito's memory talaga...tama..District 9 pala..and no I didn't watch it...good thing Sir B mentioned the "hard on the stomach" factor...

uhm..sorry didn't come across Wang Yu movies, more's the pity..

you know, dapat mag-party tayo Chito wherein we can have a marathon of all these classic gory action movies (yung mga ala Kill Bill etc.) para sa mahilig ng ganon...

But if ever I actually make a vlog, it will be probably be viewable by only a select few.

In the meantime, I'm considering doing vid-caps with my on-board cam and file it away like an ordinary file in my hard disk (to be published at a time na puede na technically and ready na ako to show it.

  51. Meron mga eksena where water was involved, e.g. yung nag-dive yung Avatar character ni Jake from a cliff and he fell into a body of water nung hinabol sya ng "avatar-equivalent" ng mabangis na tigre. But I guess current cinema technology is still limited to the THX technology (the new version of what was known in the 80s a Sensurround sound). And the Rialto Theater experience in Enchanted Kingdom will still be limited to theme parks for the moment, I think. But, you can never tell what the future of technology holds for adrenalin junkies...

  52. I finished up the rest of your review Cat. Nice summary there. I have to say that I loved the film and think it must be worth going to see in 3D. Yes, parts of the plot were predictable, but none-the-less very well done. I loved the Pandora wild life and plants. yes, it is 1 of the top favorite quotes of mine from Albert...the other is "The important thing is not to stop questioning."

ang more complete quote from Albert E runs like this (e mahaba na kc)...

“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
