Corporate America is what it's all about and the same thing with other countries. However, there are a lot more small businesses that keep America above water. Let us hope that these big corporations will slow down the closing of a lot of small mom and pop businesses. In Hawaii, a lot of small businesses have closed down because of big corporations such as WalMart, Costco, Home Depot, etc. establishing their businesses here. Sad.

But there are big chain supermarkets, household centers..maraming small stores that wouldn't earn anymore..sad talaga.. It was a privilege as I came here to witness a small shoe shop in our village, that was the last, and imagine there were 4 before in Sasbach..But after some years nag-close down na rin, and recently, 2 weeks ago the owner passed away..:( reaching 80+age..
Why is that? Are the local people more supportive of companies with European ties? Usually Walmart is a successful retail store wherever they set up their business.
sometimes I think depends din on the kind of business you do..one must make a good market study before wading into the country by taking into account its culture...
for example...I have nothing against Makro, but really, that kind of business model is not going to flourish here in the Phils...wrong target
there was something, I can't figure exactly the reason why..Like what I've said then, the lifestyle here is quite high, in that, food are cheap but clothings are expensive, health insurance is a must, pension plan..what I could remember is that since very cheap ang tinda nila, at a certain point di na nila kayang i-finance ang employees, at the same time they want to pay cheap, hindi rin pwede dahil sa lifestyle dito..so they closed down..

I think WalMart si for the masa but believe it or not, people who are affluent also buy from them because it is really cheap. Mahilig lang talaga mag shopping ang mga tao dito.
I love going to WalMart, specially when we lived less than a mile away from it some 6 years ago. They are open 24 hours and if I needed something, that's where I usually head for to get what I need. Most of the time, they have it.
that wasn't also the case here, hindi pwede sa laws ng Germany na open ang store 24 hours..even Mcdonalds close here in the night at 2am, open again at 6am.. actually, they have some quality goods, but since, ang principle nila is to be cheap, even those are sold cheaper...so hindi na nila nakaya ma-come up sa expenses nila.. We do have dicount shops here where we get cheap goods, quality are good enough, and when it comes to food, higher pa nga ang quality than the normal supermarkts..it's called ALDI and LIDL..may Pennymarkt, super discounted din don, which for me mga itatapon na production ang tinitinda nila..hehehe..
For instance, WalMart will have Mr Coffee coffee maker for $50.00 but they won't have the Keurig Single Cup Home Brewing Coffee System that sells for $295.00
Another example is WalMart will have the Lumix TZ5 camera for $250 and Shirokiya, a Japanese Dept Store will sell the same camera for $295.00.
Another example: Saran wrap, WalMart price is $1.75, Sam Choice which is a WalMart brand sells for $0.75.
At least, most of those little items you think you would need. One time I needed some washers to fix my faucet, they have those. They have many departments from sundries, to dry goods, to furniture, to clothing, nursery, pet goods, optical supplies, drugs, pizza, so on and so forth.
In other words, if there was a natural calamity, that's the place I wouldn't mind getting stuck.
In my response to Cat, the Sam Choice which is a Walmart brand of saran wrap is a $1.00 cheaper than branded saran wrap, we prefer the Sam Choice brand because it outperforms any saran wrap in the market.

No, Cat. It is the same quality camera. It's just that WalMart has more volume sales than Shirokiya. WalMart can make up the difference from the other multiple products they sell.
It's just like buying your camera battery from Best Buy as opposed to buying it from a small professional camera shop.
WalMart will not sell a Canon L f/2.8 24mm - 70mm lens but they will sell a regular Canon f/3.5 - 5.6 28mm - 105mm lens. Big difference in price. Almost triple for the first one.
Joey, honestly I don't know what they stand for..ang alam ko mag-kapatid or relatives ang owner ng ALDI & LIDL...sa France where German tourists are rampant, may LIDL..sa Australia I heard may ALDI naman...
not that I am an expert, but I thought it was like that too...that volume sales resulted in bigger discounts...
but, honestly, I heard iba ang mga models manufactured for Walmart..whether its camera specifically or other items...i.e. its not sa volume purchase lang...its really a different batch for them..*shrug*
it was for two weeks sunny, but just on Mon. evening it became cold again..
BTW, these two stores are very popular in Germany, selling almost the same things and brands..it's also quite known that they change brands' name to cope up with their prices..legal though..
I don't see that with the electronics but I see that a lot with consumer goods like the Sam's Choice saran wrap. They are also called Branded Generics. Who manufactures them? Perhaps the same brand manufacturers. They establish a contract with WalMart. WalMart pays them for that so the manufacturers make money out of WalMart. It is a win win situation.
You are absolutely right about how volume sales can offer bigger discounts.
