nawa'y busog na busog ka pa..:) guten appetit!
ReplyDeleteCheers to you Cat. I can always go for a big bag of chestnuts. It is a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteI just ate moderately last night and keep myself in check:-)
Bon Appetit!
ginutom ako after 12 midnight :-)
ReplyDeleteadjust, adjust, dapat 1 kilo of roasted chestnuts (kastanyas) next time!
hi Joey..
ReplyDeleteMy dad instilled in me a love for chestnuts, I can remember our Christmases having these (galing pa yon sa Binondo pinapadala ng tita ko don sa Cebu)...
hehe...kc naman sometimes if your the cook, you won't be eating as much as the others!
To us, Christmas is not complete without chestnuts. We used to buy them raw here roast them in the oven. Sometimes I am successful and most of the time, I am not. So now, we just buy chestnuts from Shirokiya, a Japanese department store. Almost none is wasted. They are smaller though but they are so sweet. I can finish a 1 lb. bag in one sitting. And yes, btw, they are available all year long.
ReplyDeletesame here..I can't say its Christmas really unless I see those chestnuts being sold (and well, its more true here coz I don't think its available whole year round..unless, baka Chinatown?)
ReplyDeletein Cebu it was a treat seeing these guys cooking chestnuts in a big "kalan" sort of a heap-big wok filled with pebbles? dark stones? and they had a shovel to keep on turning round and round the stones with the chestnuts...to cook them evenly...well, in one store its not always successful too (you find chestnuts where the skin sticks to the flesh)...
I tried eating 1 1/2 kilos of chestnuts in one sitting..maybe if it wasn't the last batch left on the table, I could have gone for more (sticks toothpick in between teeth)
Joey, dito sa backyard namin ay may malaking puno nga chestnut.....every early May, it starts to bloom flowers then, the 2nd week of September, it starts to drop, so many at a time...i call my friends & neighbor to pick them...due to the sticker part of the hulls or shells, they have to wear tennis shoes or just be careful...some of my American friends, eat them raw...i like just few cooked ones!...
ReplyDeleteCat, your foods essence for thanksgiving is so fulfilling & yummy...btw, we cook the chestnuts here like boiling them for 15minute, then bake or bake in the oven for another 15minutes, till it starts to pop...walla, it's done...nice, sweet & creamy...btw, before boiling make a tiny slit over the tip area...cheers
That's how we did it but for some reason they don't come out OK. Maybe the ones I buy are old. Not sure. At least most of them come out good. Or maybe I like it perfect when in essence, it cannot be perfect all the time.
ReplyDeleteShirokiya's chestnuts walang tapon 99.9% of the time.
Ah, the sign of the Holidays yan when you see guys cooking chestnuts.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's almost 3 lbs of chestnuts. I tell you what, eating chestnuts is like eating peanuts. Once you start, you can't stop:-) I just love them.
Ang swerte mo naman. Pwede bang i-freeze yan? Then you can have a full year's supply of chestnuts.
ReplyDeleteJust like corn. You can eat them raw. It is good.
ReplyDeleteoh yeah! and ang sarap ng amoy..*sniffs in reminiscence*
ReplyDeletethats true Joey...I don't mark the passage of time when I eat chestnuts...its like - the next thing I know, I have an empty bag beside me...:-)
I haven't eaten them raw *intrigued look*
ReplyDeletesuerte mo naman na may chestnuts ka on hand :-)
does it taste better raw or the cooked ones? anong diff sa taste? sweeter?
ReplyDeleteCorn, when eaten raw is flavorful and it is juicier. We steam cook corn here and it draws out the flavor better and so it tastes better and sweeter.
ReplyDeleteDi ba sa Cebu maraming corn? Isn't Cebu the corn granary of the Philippines?
ay...sorry Joey, I meant to ask about the raw chestnuts...hehehe...not corn...
ReplyDeleteI've eaten corn back home but its usually boiled or inanag. Inanag is corn roasted...and though I may end up with some black parts of the corn kernels on my teeth..its pretty good stuff if I place a pat of butter on it...
I don't think I've ever tasted raw corn...though maize as a staple instead of rice is known in Cebu...the problem though is that if I eat maize instead of rice, I get hungry pretty fast - my mom says I am weird...saying maize is supposed to be more long-lasting in terms of staying full...
Hi Joey, Oo pueding ifreeze at ganoon pa rin ang lasa...kung minsan, more tha a year pa ok lang at binibigay ko kung sinong may gusto pa....i try to steam it for a while & it's still very good...pinadadalhan ko nga yung brother ko sa NJ every year, kasi gustong-gusto nila...para bang corn ang lasa pag raw na kainin?...meron din kaming dalawang pecan tree doon sa NC sa backyard din at yung minature pear tree at peach tree...di nga namin nakukuha...yung nagaalaga ang kumukuha doon...
ReplyDeleteang sarap palang bumisita sa yo Angie...daming makakain...LOL
ReplyDeleteAngie, siguro may malaki kang freezer ano. OK palang i-freeze ang chestnuts lalo na kung ganoon pa rin ang lasa.
ReplyDeleteI think yung Chinese may style para preserved chestnuts..
ReplyDeleteThey sell them over here in a special package with some special gas in there to preserve the freshness. Some are peeled and some have shells. Taste is not as good as the freshly roasted ones.
ReplyDeletebaka pwede naman mag plant ng chestnut sa Hawaii Joey?
ReplyDeleteI am sure somebody has tried pero wala pa akong nakikita. Di ko lang alam kung hiyang ang chestnuts sa tropical weather.
