I learned that "Boxing Day" has nothing to do at all with the sport of boxing! Boxing Day is the day after Christmas. And it is called boxing because it refers to the activity of putting all items put out on display during the holidays (decors for homes, and items for sale in stores), back into the boxes where they were stored before the start of the yuletide season.

But before the servants leave, they make sure that their Landlords are okay on their own for the next few days the servants are gone. They prepare cold cuts and sandwiches, other kinds of food to make sure dear Lordships don't go hungry thus (in a nutshell), Lord Edward and family will have their lunch or dinner "boxes" ready for consumption.
Personally, I don't know anyone who thinks inside "the box." I mean which box are they talking about? It would be impossible for most people to think inside "THE" box because the world is just too big and I suppose even if you chose to put "THE" box in a really populous place like China, say Beijing, it is still a hassle for most people to go there just to think abut something. Although they could just be saying "THE" for dramatic effect, but that leads to another problem. Most boxes are simply too small and uncomfortable to think inside. I don't know about you, but my home is too small to waste space for some big old refrigerator box or the like. We have lots of boxes at my office, but again they are just too small. This whole notion that anyone would think inside boxes is just ridiculous.
Another thought of "think out of the box"...means don't confine yourself or thoughts in just one area only!... we must be thinking out of the box to survive in this world...think beyond the reasonable doubt of anything...to broaden our minds not like a tunnel vision to achieve or accomplish a goal...make use of our knowledge to think further above & beyond...(^_^)

funnily enough, Tito Rudy (hubby of Mommy Loy) talked about it yesterday when I camped out on their dining table....he had a friend daw who got one from Russia...but well the wood (material of the dolls) was more suited to the cold climate in Russia..hence his friend could not open the doll anymore...
hehehe...the solution was to place inside the ref...LOL..imagine telling your visitor you had an honest-to-goodness babushka doll (or matryoshka as its known there) and then pulling your visitor to your refrigerator instead of what he expects as a display cabinet? hehehe!
If you noticed, the issue was about how the BRAIN of each gender works or how male's and female's thinking process go and differ. In my opinion (without offense to anyone), gay men maybe physically endowed with the male physique but their thought process would most probably NOT be the same as that of a man's. I'm not sure also if their thought process is the same as that of a female's. In this case, I find the Pilipino term more accurate, descriptive and appropriate, i.e. Alanganin.
It would be interesting though to hear how your friend views this issue.
But going back to the "thinking out of the box" issue, I think even gay people (both of the male and female species) are also unable to think out of the box. Many of them follow stereotypes, uncreative, even dull. But just like everyone else, there are always exceptions, of course.
remember also the empty box drawn by the author of the Little Prince? and how he was asked to draw sheep, but he instead drew a box and said the sheep were inside?

Actually, this "thinking out of the box" (according to wikipedia) may have originated from the nine dots/points puzzle, i.e. 9 dots arranged in square at 3 points each side thus the resemblance to a box (see http://www.brainstorming.co.uk/puzzles/ninedotsnj.html). As indicated, solving the puzzle involves going beyond the range of the points.
