For a refreshing feeling, try a ginger bath! I love the smell and its supposed to have a medicinal value too.

  1. Is it anything like nabuhusan ka ng salabat sa buong katawan? Di ba mahapdi sa mga singit-singit?

  2. I mix up my batch of boiled ginger water with water in a pail...so its not that strong :-)

I think as long as its not pure ginger juice, its not mahapdi.

  3. it actually started a year ago...a friend of mine bought a couple of kilos of ginger, coz there was this supposed ritual for Chinese New Year involving ginger, a bath, some burying of something (was it the ginger?) with other rules...

he had an extra kilo of ginger, and it was cheap...so I said I would take it for my salabat brew...

when I got home, I said, hmm..what if I continue with the boiled ginger and modify it so I can take a bath in it even without a bathtub here?

    enter, ginger bath!

  4. So, how does one take a ginger bath without a bath tub? Pabuhos-buhos lang? How long should you boil the ginger? If I boil one kilo of ginger, how much water should it be mixed with? Do you still need to use soap or is there a ginger-based soap, too?

  5. Magandang idea yan para sa jacuzzi. Papatok yan Cat.

  6. Nel, I think it will make you feel good because it will open up the pores of your skin since it will provide heat into it. It might also improve circulation. This is a good idea. I might just try it myself. For all you know, it might also be good for some skin diseases like psoriasis.

  7. yes, in my case, it was tabo-tabo power! you boil the ginger the way you would boil it to make salabat...

I apologize Chito, but since I don't have big containers here, I do it the "math" way...i.e. "mata-mata" (use the eyes) mwahaha!

I gauge the size and number of ginger in my hand to the biggest saucepan I have.

Btw, I don't peel the ginger..I just make sure to give it a good scrub to take out the dirt, and then cut it up into more manageable pieces and crush it to make sure the juice can run out. If you are particular about dirt, I would suggest you use a cheesecloth or a thin piece of cloth to wrap the ginger in so that whatever dirt wasn't taken out by the scrubbing will be left inside the cloth-bag (or you can just not pour the last few ounces of water and dirt at the bottom of the pan if it accumulates there.

I did not use ginger-based soap, because the nearest I could find to such an item, which was at The Body Shop - well they've stopped selling their ginger body wash about 2 years ago.

The first time I tried it, I used the ginger-water as a sort of after-bath wash, i.e. after I bathed the usual way using shampoo and soap and rinsed myself, I used it as a last rinse.

The second time, I tried using it as the bathwater na mismo. I'm sure if I had a bathtub, I would have wallowed in ginger water for a good half-hour.

If you are really serious in trying it out, then all I can say at this point is to experiment on what ratio works best for you - baka naman you dont' like the smell of ginger..

  8. I felt very refreshed afterwards...there was an extra-kick to the feeling of being clean (brought about by a good bath)...

there was also a lingering fragrance of ginger in the air and on my skin...and since I like the smell, it added to the whole relaxed, fresh and clean feeling..

btw, the bath I took was a hot one, basically I mixed the hot ginger water with some lukewarm one. I haven't tried it as a cold-water mix

  13. but, won't there be some hot spring baths dyan sa Hawaii Joey? I think you can duplicate it that way ...

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes, there are hot springs here in Hawaii, on the Big Island of Hawaii where the active volcanoes are. Not sure if it can be duplicated or simulate. Here is the link for you to look at:

  15. pwede na yan..basta pool of hot spring water..mas ok nga siguro if outdoor pa..para feeling natural...

of course nag-add lang ang Japanese na mga indoor ones (fed by hot spring water) but am sure pwede mo magawa dyan sa Hawaii Joey...then kutis porcelana ka na...ahaha!

  16. Why not?

Are they still around? We used to go there a lot when we were kids.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm not sure about Pansol itself..but I think most of the hot springs in Laguna are still around..I remember going to one with my teammates in Sara Lee some time ago..our boss at that time had a house there na piped into the swimming pool ang hot water from the spring...oks din, though I wasn't used to it..

  19. You could be onto something here as good as any herbal bath, Cat.
It has to be a great way to sweat toxins out, just like one would when drinking the ginger drink, a detoxifying agent.
    It's a sauna bath without a sauna.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's good to know. btw, where do they their source of hot springs? From Taal Volcano?

    ReplyDelete
  21. oh yes, I googled it now..and yun nga ang side-effect..one sweats tons...hehehe...

I didn't mention it because I literally do sweat a lot here at home...though probably because I didn't soak but just did the buhos-buhos way, hence di ganon ka tindi...

ginger in, ginger out (if you take ginger tea while taking the ginger bath....)

I notice that ever since I just do the sauna, even without exercising...and lack of sleep, I actually still feel better...

  22. that I have no idea..maybe Chito or some learned person would be perhaps the best fount of knowledge on this...

(coz I'd probably say the center of the earth *wink*)

    ReplyDelete
  23. I guess it wont be that effective using cold water.

    ReplyDelete
  24. unless inumin as cold ginger tea..maybe?

  25. recycle, have a care for the environment!

what shall we do with cold ginger water bath? abah..e di if we follow the logic earlier....ehem,ehem...

    ReplyDelete
  26. Anybody there knows the answer? Cat and I will be waiting...

  27. Re source of hot spring water in Laguna - the location of most hot springs in the town of Los Baños is located at the foot of Mt. Makiling which is considered as a potentially active volcano (just like the hot springs in the town of Tiwi in Albay which are also at the foot of Mt. Mayon). Same is true for the hot springs in Camiguin where Mt. Hibok-hibok is along with six others.

Taal is too far from Laguna to be the source of its hot springs.

  30. I'm sure Chito has already found a couple of links on how-to for ginger bath.

Here's one from me when I googled now:
    http://www.goodeveningworld.com/a-great-anti-aging-solution-ginger-bath/

    ReplyDelete
  31. and another one:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_2151627_detox-ginger-bath.html

    Things You'll Need:

    * Bath tub
    * Fresh grated ginger or ginger essential oil
    * Hot water

    1. Pour a hot bath. Make sure the water is between 95 and 103 degrees. Hot water aids in cleansing the skin and opening the pores.

    2. Add two tablespoons of fresh grated ginger. Or six to 10 drops of ginger essential oil. If you are frail, or have sensitive skin, use less.

    3. Soak in the tub for no more than 30 minutes. Keep a cool cloth around the neck to ease any lightheadedness.

    4. Step out of the tub and wrap yourself in a robe or towel. Sweating will continue for about an hour or two after the bath. Toxins are released through sweating.

    5. Get some sleep as the ginger bath will most likely leave you feeling tired. And drink plenty of water.

  32. You're tight Cat. As a matter of fact, the net is full of such sites. But I'm not really into detox baths.... well, come to think of it, I'm not much into baths itself. Once a week lang ako kasi naliligo. Sayang ang sabon at tubig.

    ReplyDelete
  33. you can always reuse your bath water....*grin*

and since its become soapy anyway because you've used it, you don't need to get another bar of soap until the bath water has evaporated...naging cool pa sa loob ng iyong bathroom (if enclosed sya)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Bwahahahahaha... Ako rin ganon. Kagaya ng aso namin. Once a week din kung maligo:-)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mas OK siguro pag jacuzzi. I will make a note of this and try this at home sometime.
