How to: A Guide to Making Spicy Pomanders

I first read about pomanders in a crafts book when I was in grade 3 but I only tried making pomanders when I was in high school. Pomanders can be easily made from an orange stuck with cloves. I love the smell of this combination, and hence I will try to reproduce (with some modifications) the pomander of my youthful memories.

Putting together other tips rather than just sticking oranges with cloves - I read that if you roll the orange in a mixture of powdered spices, then place it in a paper bag and keep it in a drawer for 2 to 4 weeks, the spices penetrate the skin of the fruit..enhancing the fragrance.

How to make spicy pomanders:

1. Wind two strips of sticky tape all around each orange (depends on how many pomanders you want to make). You can form a cross pattern or whatever pattern you want to try out. Stick cloves into the uncovered orange skin. Tip: Pierce a hole for each clove first, using a cocktail stick..or a crochet hook or knitting needle.

2. Blend a mixture of nutmeg and cinnamon (some would say include orris root powder but I don't know where to get that).  Roll the oranges in the spices. Wrap them in a paper napkin and leave in a warm place for 2 to 4 weeks. (I'd say put then in the bathroom since after a while, the orange here in the Philippines would probably shrink due to our weather).

3. Carefully peel off the strips of sticky tape and tie ribbons around the fruit in its place. You can also make a loop for hanging the orange.

Smell that orange-y goodness!

Orange you glad?

  1. googled orris root powder, and here it is from wiki -
"Orris root is a term used for the roots Iris germanica, Iris florentina, and Iris pallida. Once important in western herbal medicine, it is now used mainly as a fixative and base note in perfumery, as well as an ingredient in many brands of gin.

Fabienne Pavia, in her book L'univers des Parfums (1995, ed. Solar), states that in the manufacturing of perfumes using orris, the scent of the iris root differs from that of the flower. After preparation the scent is reminiscent of the smell of violets.

After an intial drying period, which can take five years or more depending on the use, the root is ground, dissolved in water and then distilled. One ton of iris root produces two kilos of essential oil, making it a highly prized substance, and its fragrance has been described as tenaciously flowery, heavy and woody (Paraphrasing Pavia, Dutch translation, page 40). Typical iris-perfumes (where the compound of the ingredient prevails over the other components) are: "Infusion d'iris"(Prada*); "Tumulte"(Christian Lacroix*); "Aqua di Parma"* and "Iris nobile"(Aqua di Parma*); "Irisia"(Creed*); "Y"(Yves Saint Laurent*) and "Vol de nuit"(Guerlain*).

Orris root is often included as one of the many ingredients of Ras el hanout, a blend of herbs and spices used across the Middle East and North Africa, primarily associated with Moroccan cuisine."

  3. Seriously, this is a great concept. It is a natural room air freshener, specially for the Powder room or even in the bedroom, or better yet, all over the house.

  9. Mwahahahahaha. Para kang tomboy:-)

Dati akong gumagamit ng Tancho Tique pomade at cosmetique. Kintab ng buhok ko noon. then the Beatlemania came and out went my Tancho Tique and cosmetique. But I have to admit, talagang mabango ang Tancho. Would you believe that I sold Tancho Tique here in Hawaii when I got my first job? It competed with Three Flowers Pomade. Found out later that the Manongs are the biggest users of them products.

  11. ah..haven't heard or tried of the Three Flowers, Tancho lang ang what I can really recall because I had very shiny hair...I think ok naman for taming rebellious hair like mine..and probably very good in the long run for the health of our hair (oh di ba Joey, ok pa ang hair natin?)

shempre when Manong at Manang na tayo, maybe we will go back to using 'em products

  12. Post! Post! Ako ngayon ang babawi sa iyo:-)

  13. Three Flowers pomade is the lesser quality pomade than Tancho Tique. When my hair was long, Tancho managed it well ala Elvis style. It was rebellious too. I guess it did help in the health of my hair in the long run. OK pa ako. Di pa rin ako Kalbo unlike some of my friends...LOL!!

Siguro pag manang at manong na tayo, di na tayo gagamit nyan. Kalbo na rin tayong dalawa...LOL!!
