btw,to-Chito..
ReplyDeletemay-comment-si-Mar-about-carabao-milk-studies-in-UP...which-I-think-came-from-my-commenting-on-how-nice-it-would-be-if-tayo-mag-export-ng-carabao's-milk-to-other-countries..or-something-like-that.
it-was-in-the-post-I-had-about-the-Milk-Station-in-Southern-Cebu-that-I-passed-by.
SARAP !! thats what my Papa always eats while having lunch & dinner !

Let me check it out. But from my recollection, UP indeed had a full-fledged research institute focused on dairy products. If I remember right, it was referred to a DTRI for Dairy Training and Research Institute. But it is remembered more for its kesong puti and fresh milk products that it sells rather than the research output it comes up with. And I must say they were very nutritious not to mention delicious and affordable. People who go to Los Banos for picnic or outings always make it a point to drop by DTRI for such milk products. I'm not sure if it DTRI is still there in UP though. Sayang kung wala na.
ReplyDeleteBut I know for a fact that there is another government agency, the Nueva Ecija based Philippine Carabao Center (PCC). And in conjuction with another agency called Naitonal Dairy Authority (NDA), the PCC are implementing programs designed to increase local milk production and increase export volume as well. See related (but dated) article here - http://www.nda.da.gov.ph/dairysit6b.htm
Suffice it to say that milk production, including Carabao milk, is still very small and has had no dramatic development since two decades ago. This is partly because a large portion of our local milk industry is considered "back-yard" type operation and the few who realize the value of mass production through cooperatives are resolving perennial problems that has nothing to do at all with production capacity, technological developments and markets. Just like many of our agriculture-based cooperatives, they are consumed by organizational conflicts and petty politics. And we're not even talking about financing.

Thanks for the information Chito. I guess we use our carabao, still to plow the fields as primary usage, and not for the purpose of milk or even meat. My friend told me that we still import buffalo milk from other countries, despite the research happening in the country. I wasn't sure if it was UP Los Baños or not that was doing the research.

Here's what I found in Wikipedia (for what its worth).
First cloned buffalo
On 15 September 2007, the Philippines announced its development of Southeast Asia's first cloned buffalo. The Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD), under the Department of Science and Technology in Los Baños, Laguna approved this project. The Department of Agriculture's Philippine Carabao Center (PCC) will implement "Cloning through somatic cell nuclear transfer as a tool for genetic improvement in water buffaloes". "Super buffalo calves" will be produced. There will be no modification or alteration of the genetic materials, as in GMOs (genetically modified organisms).[19]
[edit]Super Carabao
On 1 January 2008, the Philippine Carabao Center in Nueva Ecija, per Filipino scientists, initiated a study to breed the super water buffalo that could produce 4 to 18 litres of milk/day (gene-based technology). Also, the first test-tube hybrid carabao was born there in 2004, named "Glory" after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Joseph Estrada's most successful project as an opposition senator, the PCC was created through Republic Act 3707, the Carabao Act of 1992.[20]

just-thinking-because-of-my-recent-encounter-with-a-tamaraw...
ReplyDeleteif-they-are-related-to-the-carabao..maybe-pwede-tamaraw-na-gatas??
Did you really? Wow, you were face-to-face with an endangered species.
ReplyDeleteThere is a Tamaraw in the heart of Chicago, at the Field Museum, one of my favorite museums.
They display a stuffed (preserved Tamaraw) and the museum has a nice feature story to go with the diorama.

hi Mar,
ReplyDeleteI read it..and sadly its true.
As of last counting, about 274 tamaraws I think are in Mindoro at this point.
We met with 2 of them - one female "Mimi" and her offspring "Kali" (I will post an album on this sometime in the future) and that part of the program of the Phils is not really doing well. We only saw 2 of these in the big area. No further efforts have been done.
We talked at great length to Danny Roco, the field officer who we were with (accompanied us from San Jose), he has some theories why the tamaraws who were captured died actually in captivity. Very plausible too.
It makes me very sad thinking..that such things actually could be avoided, if like what we see in Natl Geo and Discovery channels, where capture and observation, and doctoring is done thru tranquilizer shots..with minimal damage to the animals.
I'm also quite unhappy with the way the very rich biodiversity in our country being not given enough notice and support. It makes me want to go to war actually sometimes :-)
taga KAIN lang ako Cath ! hehehehe ... I'll ask the BUYER , my wifey !
ReplyDeletebtw, my ka-adventurer to Mindoro, Keen..
ReplyDeletehas just posted some tamaraw-related stuff :-)
please do check them out, because my own posts will take much longer..and he has more details for those interested to see these endangered animals.
btw, Kali was quite ok..its his mother Mimi who was more ferocious...

Cat, isn't that the Pastillas de Leche every balikbayan craves about? I am one of them and sometimes we get lucky that a relative would bring us the ones made with carabao's milk. Masarap talaga and they are bigger than usual in size.
ReplyDeleteMyra and her dad used to add the fresh carabao's milk with rice when she was growing up there. I also love carabao's milk, specially the real fresh ones from the farm where we used to get when we were kids. It is not even pasteurized yet, I think.
ReplyDeletehi Joey,
ReplyDeletethere are also pastillas de leche which are quite good, but made of cow's milk. Pastillas and yemas..sarap talga!
those from carabaos are more soft (less firm)..but I actually like them better if I put them in the ref for a while before I eat 'em...
I've not actually been able to buy carabao's milk here...goat's milk yes..but ages and ages na since I've drunk the carabao's milk...
ReplyDeleteI agree with you though...ang tsalap-tsalap-tsalap :-)
thanks Kuya Nel...sana malapit-lapit and accessible to me dito :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Cat, I realize that too about the pastillas de leche made from cow's milk but the one made made from carabao's milk tastes better and I like them better too. but you a re right, they are much softer and it is quite really good when you put them in the fridge first before you eat them.
ReplyDeleteAh, goat's milk I is also very good. That is always available in the supermarkets here. But carabao's milk, I wish I had thought about that when I was there last time. For all you know, I would have had some luck in getting them. Talagang tsalap tsalap tsalap yan:-)
ReplyDeletehere naman, madalang fresh goat's milk.
ReplyDeletegoat's milk powder yes, available..pero very mahal, all the more yung fresh pa.
am sure you would have got the carabao's milk.
next visit mo, let's have a milk drinking spree...carabao's milk of course..ikaw ang provider ng pantulak..hahaha!
I thought kc maybe coz it was of the weather here, being hot and everything na parang super soft na ang pure carabao's milk pastillas which I bought...
ReplyDeletea few hours in the ref, made them just right for me...yummy again..
*hehehe..nagpapainggit*
Sinabi mo! Ayuz!Ako ang taya sa panulak, ikaw sa pam bara..LOL.
ReplyDeleteYou are probably right. The weather can make a big difference. Kung nagpapainggit ka, magpadala...ha ha ha ha!! That is always a welcome sight.
ReplyDeletecge, sino bang pupunta dyan na kakilala natin?
ReplyDeleteproblem though..is that most of the pure carabao's milk pastillas na bitbit ko ay paubos na...hahaha...
hehe...no problem..maraming banana q dito...

ReplyDeletewith matching pose yan Joey...*yabang pose*
ReplyDelete:-D Talagang Inggit!!
ReplyDeleteI've practically attracted more carabao's milk pastillas :-)
ReplyDeletethis afternoon, I met up with friends from a group here in Multiply...
I received a pack of carabao's milk pastillas which was in another shape, and firmer...SARAP!
and just when my stash from Mindoro is almost down to the last couple of pieces..
yum...life is good!
thanks Nani! pero mas type kong tawagin kang Kat dito :-)
Patikim naman....Hu hu hu
ReplyDeleteSarap talaga!!!
ReplyDeletesiguro Joey, mag import ka ng water buffalo dyan sa Hawaii....*Grin*
ReplyDeletehomemade pa and from your backyard yung pastillas...
Ano?! E di pakakainin ko pa yun. Bibili na lang ako ng powdered milk. I think my mom still has the recipe to make pastillas de leche. She used to make that when we were kids.
ReplyDeleteit would be nice if may powdered carabao milk...
ReplyDeleteOh Yes, that would be really nice! Meron ba dyan?
ReplyDeleteThe only one I know of that exist is Nido and some brand of baby formula milk.
nope, I have never heard of carabao's milk in powder form...
ReplyDeleteSomebody should think about doing that. Pa patok yan dyan:-)
ReplyDeleteprobably the problem is the lack of consistent and adequate supply...
ReplyDeleteSabagay...I have never seen a carabao farm or herds of carabao being bred for milk or meat like the cattle.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, let's enjoy carabao's milk as a novelty like a Beluga caviar. Hard to find, di ba?
ReplyDeletecarabao beef? uhm...cara-beef? parang narinig ko filler sya :-(
ReplyDeleteparang gusto ko tuloy ma-known as the carabao empress...este..if may cattle king..or beef baron...dapat makatayo ng ganon na business...
ReplyDeleteYou mean to say, second class yung carabao meat?
ReplyDeleteYou know, this reminds me of 2 movies in which the Igorots slaughtered a carabao with bolo knives in a ritual, Banawe in which Charito Solis was the main star and Apocalypse Now. They both happened towards the end of the movie.
Why not? Sige, tingnan mo ang possibilities at baka swertehin ka.
ReplyDeletenaku, capital kailangan..sana ko makakuha ng 1 zillion carabaos if no dough?
ReplyDeletehmm..parang may narinig ko ring ritual na a live chicken was eaten/gnawed on :-)
ReplyDeleteI saw this one LIVE when I was in Grade 6 at UST Elem School during our school fair. This guy killed and ate a live chicken by biting its neck and gnawed it. He was like a wild man.
ReplyDeletebleargh!
ReplyDeleteI know. I was with my brother, Buddy at that time. He too cannot forget that up to now.
ReplyDeleteyucky!!! kadiri to death! (colegiala accent)
