"Kinabuch's"
Puerto Princesa
Palawan, Philippines
I swore I wouldn't start posting any of my Palawan pictures..but images replayed in my mind of what I had eaten that first night!
Dinner at Kinabuch's.
Which is where most go to eat this delicacy while in the city.
Another restaurant specializes also in another dish which is the real thing - the "balinsasayaw" or the "bird's nest" and its ending result: "bird's nest soup". Thats for another post...as it was done very quickly on the last day.
Extreme cuisine, reigns supreme!
Yeah. Uhm...right.
*Gulp*
this is actually mild...check the food being skewered here:

how did your tummy reacted..sanayan din yan sabagay..:)
ReplyDeleteThe name would be enough to put me off.
ReplyDeleteno difference...but then I didn't finish the whole plate..Sam, our other backpacker..did that. Keen, the remaining third of our team (ehem) took one itsy-bitsy-tinsy-winsy bite and backed out...LOL
ReplyDeleteThis kind of food is ok for pulutan..but I think it may have some side effect afterwards like when you burp :-)
hehe! funny you should say that...
ReplyDeletecoz actually the term itself of "tamilok" means something different also in our dialect..which is different from the one in Palawan...
don't ask please what it was...
I've heard mostly good things about it. Prolly not much different from eating raw oysters, jumping salad, or.....earthworms? LOL I would love to try it someday.
ReplyDeleteI meant the "Wood-worm mullusc" lol.
ReplyDeletehahaha..same dog though :-)
ReplyDeleteam not sure about the jumping salad or earthworms as I haven't tasted them..ever! hehe
ReplyDeletebut...when I was told its like oysters..I was comforted and was the first one to taste...a bit bland though..I wonder if I get one which is really super fresh?
paired with "tuba" (coconut wine), seems to be the best combo..
*talking to myself* " its like spaghetti, just spaghetti"
ReplyDeleteThat must be Ono-licious, Cat! I would love to try that someday. Must be one heck of a delicacy dish huh?
ReplyDeleteI bet the fresh ones taste better.
Can you describe to us how it felt like eating Tamilok for the first time?
it was sort of bland..not as delicious as I remember eating oysters - tahong - scallops etc.
ReplyDeleteam not sure if it was because it wasn't as fresh as if one were to get it from the source...
then its slimy :-)
and if you eat a lot..you burp a lot with some not so nice burping..hehe...
Eeeeww!! So it is like regurgitating something from the.... you know...
ReplyDeleteBut I still would like to try that if it is a delicacy there in Palawan.
Just slurp it up slowly huh.
ReplyDeleteoh yes, definitely! you can't say you have been to Palawan unless you've eaten this and the real birds nest :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure, Cat. Real bird's nest soup and the Tamilok, panalo ang mga yan!!
ReplyDeleteNo. I don't think so. By the way, do you know what an authentic bird's nest soup is made of?
ReplyDeleteI think its the bird's nest..pero made out of the bird's saliva..di ko na na google..pero masarap :-)
ReplyDeleteI beg to disagree. I've been to Palawan twice but never in the same place. (Naks!) I need not eat those worms. The real bird's nest is available at Balinsasayaw in SIlang, Cavite which is near Tagaytay. It's a Palawan restaurant and almost everything is shipped from Palawan. Cheap pa! :-)
ReplyDeleteWow! For real? Mapuntahan nga next time akong uuwi. Yun nga lang wala yung ambiance ng island feeling ng Palawan.
ReplyDeleteYuck!! Whether it is from the bird or something else, medyo parang atras ako diyan.
ReplyDeleteI just can't help but think about those poor baby birds whose nest have been taken.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so foreign.
ReplyDeleteIt belongs to my "I'll-try-anything-once" list.
I might comeback for more.
figures...you chickened out on the poor Tamilok...tsk..tsk..yeah yeah...so explain it away why you didn't eat the delicacy while in Palawan *wink*
ReplyDeletebut Chito, you have eaten bird's nest soup before here even sa Manila di ba? they offer it yata in Chinese restos...whether fake or not..di ko lang alam...
ReplyDeleteyou know that reminds me of a cartoon scene which I think was from "The Far Side"...
ReplyDeleteso here's a scene of a man making off with a couple of chicken eggs...on the other side of the road, there was this chicken (say hen) holding (its a cartoon, so imagine mo na lang) a cute little baby...presumably the man's child...
ok, so I know the way I recounted it wasn't humorous but how it was presented in the cartoon was funny and thought-provoking...
thats true Mar, it was on my "I'll-try-anything-once-list-which-is-not-super-gross-for-me".
ReplyDeleteI still can't stomach the thought of eating those scorpions and other insect-like stuff...
I think of green goo when they get squished..urgh..
