  1. A good idea Cat, it takes less time since the new Shinkansen line has opened.
    Hugs.

  2. thanks John...so there's a new line then going thataway...wow..JR Rail Pass is so useful..hehe! I am not good with buses...

  3. You're welcome. Yes I love that Rail Pass. There are small airplanes flying to and from but are usually booked up with long waiting times plus there is a very strict luggage weight limit. The old Express rail route means three train changes and takes about 19 hours from Narita to Sapporo.

and since you have been doing the visits up North, I know I can count on you if I need to ask questions on how to plan my trip thereabouts...*hehe..taking things for granted*

  5. thank you John..

the last few days a colleague of mine and I have been chatting coz she is going to Tokyo and has only 2 days off.
She was debating between going to see Mt. Fuji or going to Disney Sea coz she wanted both.
But her friend can only accompany her to one and didn't like the thought of going to one of those places by herself (she would be in a group tour, but she wanted someone she knew already to be with her).

  6. hmm...ok so its probably like what we have here like when I went to Batanes...smaller planes, strict luggage restrictions...
would you by any chance know how much? say 10 kilos?

with the new train route, would there be train changes also? and how long would it take?

  7. I know nothing about the Disney place but as it can hardly be looked at as Japanese culture it would not be on my list of places to visit. Mount Fuji is a different matter. I have a good friend Yuko Watanabe san that lives on the shore of one of the five lakes surrounding the foot of Fujisan in Yamanashi ken, I drove there with my friend Hiro Kawata san from Kanagawa in 2006. I know that Fujisan can be reached by train but heve no idea which side of the mountain you would arrive at.

  8. she was referring me to this link http://www.mtfujitour.com/

and was worried if she could also see Mt. Fuji (its the same as the Mayon Volcano here in the sense that if the weather does not cooperate, then you only see clouds covering Fuji-san)...

  9. As far as I remember from what I read weight and size depended upon the type of plane and the price. In general these were meant for businessmen travelling to and from meetings. As I had 30 kilos i decided that rail was the only way other than by sea.
See this blog - http://stormlizard.multiply.com/journal/item/552/Holiday_Update_Eleven From Sapporo to Nagoya 12.5 hours I had to change trains in Tokyo for Nagoya so the Sap - Tok journey must be about 11 hours. with changes at Hakodate and Hachinohe.

  10. Mountains of that size will always be a chance of luck. When we went there it was a totally clear sunny day, this gives another problem for photos as there can be so much light reflected from the ice and snow that the results can be very hazy and unclear dependant upon from which side you happen to be on.

  11. hmm....good point...so probably just wish for a clear day with no skies but not necessarily sunny....

  13. Yes, my camera Canon EOS400DSLR was able to take relatively good pics, Hiro's pocket Sony could not. I must add that we viewed from a neighbor hillside at mid day, not the best time. Early morning or late afternoon would have been much better.
