Sand-digging dog

The culprit and the victim after the fact (we let bygones be bygones and became friends by this time) -->

Well, here's a little warning for my fellow travellers - if you do go to Sabang beach in Palawan, you can be sure there are dogs of all shapes and sizes on the wide expanse of that beach.

There I was, trying to relax and have my siesta that lazy afternoon with the sea singing its lullaby when I was abruptly almost thrown off from my gently-swinging hammock.

Rats and double-rats!

There was a sudden onslaught of gritty grains on my hair, face (thank goodness I wasn't snoring with my mouth open to the elements) and chest.

Why was it raining sand when the sky was bright cerulean blue?
For that matter..hmm...why was it raining sand at all?

Turns out, these beach dogs take a respite from the heat by digging the sand to get to the somewhat moist and cooler layer below.

And...dognabbit...they don't care who gets caught in the crossfire between the hot sand and the erm...hot dog - even if you are 2 inches from the fight zone.

Pffft! *spits sand out of the mouth and snorts through nose*

  2. I think the dog is just trying to establish his territory and by doing that he meant you're only there on a temporary basis. For all you know, he must have peed first before he dug:-)

On the other hand, now that he has done that, he sat next to you to protect you from any outsider since you are in his territory. Smart dog. That's their instinct.

I hope you gave him a treat or some kind of reward:-)

  5. this doggie could probably be useful in archeological digs...he was quite enthusiastic about it..

  6. I sincerely hope you don't mean that he peed on the sand before he vigorously dug it and sent the grains towards unsuspecting me...

  8. thanks, I asked Keen to take the picture when he passed by later...the dog was still sitting near my hammock at that time with his sandy coat...

  9. we can put a thought bubble here wherein am the one resting on the sand and the dog is on the hammock...

  10. That's exactly what I meant...LOL!! And now that he's got his mark on you, you became part of his territory and that's why he sat close by you to guard and protect you.

  11. Were all the dogs friendly and asking for food?

  12. teka, teka..malay natin...baka "she" not "he"

  13. well, the dogs I encountered were all friendly...and they didn't seem to be asking for food...(though I bet they would not refuse it)..

I think they were used to people/tourists on the beach so they were all just engrossed in either following us around (one dog followed us almost all the way to Sabang falls, rocky road and all)...though Sam (kasama ko si Sam and Keen on the Puerto Princesa trip) said he was stopped with so many dogs when he went out around 5 am to try taking his pictures...

  14. Daming stray dogs. Dito hinuhuli yan at dinadala sa Humane Society for adoption or they get put out. Kawawa naman kung walang mag ampon sa kanila.

  15. that reminds me...I was telling my companions that with so many dogs, (I didn't see horses), they should just put the dogs to use like Alaskan huskies and tow carts (coz I felt sorry for the poor water carabao)

  16. Siguro nga. Most dogs are trainable naman. If a dog is really smart, even if it is old, it can still learn new tricks.

  17. pero which is smarter? dogs or pigs?

  18. What's up with the pigs? I thought we were just talking about dogs and carabaos here....LOL.

  19. If you saw the movie "Babe" you'll see how pigs can actually be smarter than dogs. And sometimes, animals are even smarter than some humans :-)

  20. I LOVE that movie, Chito. The actor, Cromwell, did a great job as the farmer and pig owner of Babe. The next movie I saw of him was in LA Confidential where he played the role of a corrupt, villainous LA police chief. Big contrast.

  21. Cromwell is a very good character actor. He can make you hate him or love him (in the movies, of course).

  22. in this place, yes carabaos and dogs are what you see...but I can hardly ask you to compare which is smarter, carabaos or dogs....(ROTFL)

but since pigs have been touted to be smart...as well as my canine furry friends...that was why I wondered...

also, aren't pigs good at sniffing (well, I know they sniff out truffles at least)...can you imagine if may bomb-sniffing pigs? (ROTFL again..)

  23. well, probably our ape ancestors were smarter than us....more than one way to get that banana...

but of course, "Babe" is such a winner of a film...I loved the first best...nakakatawa pa rin ang sequels naman..but the first film had that certain charisma

  24. Speaking of James Cromwell, just the other week, I was watching reruns of StarTrek TNG....and a familiar faced leapt out of the screen at me...*grin*

yes, a younger James Cromwell was playing a government official (Prime Minister I think)....

I always have a lot of fun picking out characters in a film wherein they either younger or still an unknown at that time...

  25. If they sniffed at one and it blows up, you'll get a lot of bacon bits...ROTFL!!

  26. James Cromwell also appeared in the movie "The Queen" as Prince Philip.
