Neko in Japan: Going zen at NanZENji (album)

May 8, 2008
Kyoto

One of Kyoto's best known Zen temples....Nanzenji is also one of the world's most important. Rinzai Zen was introduced to Japan by the Chinese priest Ensai in 1191 and emphasizes the use of koans, paradoxical puzzles or questions that help the practitioner to overcome the normal boundaries of logic. (am thinking is this somewhere in the lines of...why am I here if I am not there...who am I if I am not you?...kidding! am not cut out for Zen at all)

This temple is set amidst a grove of spruce. It was founded in 1293 but the present buildings date to the 16th century. The Sanmon gate, as seen below has on its upper floor, various images of Buddha and paintings. There is a charge of ¥500 for admission to the upper storey, which offers pleasant views over the surrounding area of Kyoto.

In the building behind the main hall is a sliding door with a famous painting by Kano Tanyu of a tiger drinking water in a bamboo grove. There are also other lesser temples and buildings spread throughout the grounds (but the gardens are more well-known), including Nanzen-in, which served as the emperor's vacation grounds whenever he visited the temple.

Since I was in a hurry, I just took pictures of where I could scamper around and didn't try to see the interior anymore. Check out this site for more information:http://nanzenji.com/english/index.html

How to get here (if you didn't take my style of riding on the shuttle from New Miyako): From Kyoto or Sanjo station, take bus 5 and get off at Eikan-mae.

Nanzenji is within walking distance of Heian Jingu, Chionin and Ginkakuji. It makes a good starting or ending point for a walk along the Philospher's Path (Ginkakuji is at the other end).

Open daily from 8:40 am to 5 pm (4:30 pm in the winter time).
Admission to main hall is ¥500 and to Nanzen-in ¥300.

Though I was salivating and definitely interested, sadly I wasn't able to try these due to lack of time - there are several traditional restaurants in the vicinity...Okutan, is north of Nanzenji and has been serving vegetarian tofu meals for 350 years...and....Junsei, on the road leading west from Nanzenji serves tofu, obento and kaiseki in a beautiful garden setting....and since this is making me hungry, I shall stop here....

I like the way that The Japanese are so good at making it easy for visitors to get around.

yes, lesser people than other temples...I usually ran into some school group or another on an excursion to a temple..but this time, thank goodness, just a few high-schoolers...

which reminds me...what are they doing? cutting class? my high-school days had fixed hours...unlike college when we had gaps between classes...

    sugoi! inggit ako..hahaha!

I love Kyoto..I wish I could go back there again, *sigh* I was planning to go back this year and go to Osaka due to Cebu Pacific cheaper fares, but on second thought, I thought maybe with the recession, I should be a domestic tourist...though I've visited mostly Visayas and Mindanao already...

one of my dear wishes is to try and live in Japan for 1 year..coz I love how its so safe and of course the transportation system is so hassle-free!
