Neko in Japan: Tumbling into Toyokuni Shrine (album)

May 7, 2008
Kyoto, Japan

There I was, walking away from Sanjusangendo Hall, passing the Kyoto National Museum and hopefully going towards Gion, when across the street, I saw the torii (gate) for this shrine. It was only when I got back to the Philippines that I looked for information on what this was all about.

I'm glad that I gave in to my curiosity since I found some interesting things to take pictures of. If you can zoom into the marker with explanation of the shrine (in one of the pictures below), you will find additional information.

From wikipedia, about Toyukuni Shrine -

This a Shinto shrine located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto, Japan. It was built in 1599 to commemorate Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

It is the location of the first tamaya (an altar used in Shinto-style ancestor worship) ever constructed, which was later destroyed by Nobunaga Oda. This Hōkoku-jinja is the official tomb and shrine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who died September 18, 1598 in Kyoto. In 1897, the tercentenary of Hideyoshi was celebrated at this site.

Strictly in that order, i.e. weapons first, food second and the country as third.

I didn't dare try..with my luck, baka di ko na maratnan ng ayos yung Gion (I had to buy tickets for the performance)...

and a good thing too...ang layo pa pala lakarin ko before I could get to Gion Corner...after this, napapasok pa ako ng mga maliliit na roads, lumabas malapit sa isang post office, mga cafes, innumerable vendo machines...theater...etc.

but its really nice to explore...

this reminds me..kami din ni Ms. H napadpad ng shrine when we were in Tokyo...di naman namin plano..and yun na notice ko..parang di ko na ma-differentiate ang shrines from one another when it comes to decorations...:-(
