Gion Corner: Kyogen/Comic Play (video)

May 7, 2008
Gion Corner: Kyoto Traditional Music Center

Reposting since I didn't notice earlier that the video I uploaded got cut short...

I think all of the videos I took were shaky at one point or another, however I am thankful that while I didn't have enough memory on my cam to record this funny play, I was there to enjoy it and have a good laugh.

"Since 1962, Gion Corner is a popular night spot where tourists can experience an overview of 7 kinds of Japanese traditional arts and entertainment in single setting: Kyoto style Dance, Flower Arrangement, Tea Ceremony, Japanese Harp, Comic Play, Court Music and Puppet Play."

This kind of play is performed as an interlude for Noh plays. It can be regarded as a form of art consisting of a primitive dance including acrobatic stunts performed at the time of rice planting for example.

The play depicted here is "Boshibari" or the Cudgel Play and Servants.

Basically, the master of the house is going to go on a business trip but has concerns that his sake might be stolen by his servants while he is away. He ties them up with their hands behind their backs and leaves them.

However, the servants can move their fingers freely even if tied up and so they are able to drink the sake from a cup and then of course get drunk. The master of the house returns and stands behind his servants while they are dancing about and his face is reflected on the surface of the cup they have. Of course the servants are surprised and comment on the grim face their master has. The latter gets angry and beats them...and the servants try to escape and run about. Finito. It is funnier if you see it in person hehehe..

Did the audience laugh as in a western-style live sitcom? Parang tahimik yata yung mga tao.
