October 18, 2007 (Thursday) - sulit! J-club members who shelled out cash for ingredients...and other interested people (who obviously loved eating Jap food amongst other things) joined us in leaning how to make kani salad, california maki and onigiri (rice ball).
Ever since I saw characters in anime rolling these onigiri (think Honda Tohru in "Fruits Basket"), I've been itching to try making these riceballs or at least eat them.
For kani salad, its very easy, just layer all ingredients and mush them all together. Some had artistically arranged theirs, but I just tossed mine on a plate...and there were a lot of cucumbers and lettuce leaves on my dish, which prompted one of my orientation batchmates before to ask me teasingly if I could finish all of it. Ha! O ye of little faith and knowledge of my eating habits! Beware!
Apparently, aside from buying these ingredients from Japanese grocery stores, you could also buy them at a cheaper rate at Cartimar, where you can bargain and window shop for the best prices for the ingredients. Fish roe, crab sticks, Japanese distilled vinegar etc. etc. were passed around like hotcakes.
Secondly, we made california maki...and since there were a shortage of mats, we just took turns rolling them. Surprisingly it was quite easy...but I had fun teasing the others this time as theirs were a lot fatter than my log/roll.
And last but not the least, we made onigiri. The only thing I could complain about was the rice, which seemed uncooked or hastily cooked in some portions, making it "liso-lisohan" as we say..or some grains were seedlike when you bit into them. However, the outcome still looked pretty good, and with fillings such as ham and cheese and tuna...I felt I could make them myself for my bento during lunchtime.
Now if I had these ingredients in ready reach, I'd probably be off selling them to unsuspecting people..hehehe...

honestly, pag tingin ko sa mat used to roll it..sabi ko sa sarili ko..para yatang placemat namin to sa bahay ah..without the fancier threads..hehehe..
if may mga oras lang sana ang mga tao..ganda rin sana to have a cooking session with you girls...and am thinking its more practical for me in the long run if I could prepare food like this..diretso kain...
shrimpri...este shempre...ang fave ko is yung ebi tempura..which maganda sana if ma perfecto ko yung coating nya..parang gusto kong mag food-tripping...

yep, its certainly unusual...and unfortunately not always in stock...I think it would be better to ask beforehand otherwise you get stuck eating other dishes but the one you really wanted to taste is not there...

since ang diet nila is mostly fish, I think it has its merits...each type of cuisine may added benefits...pero ang gusto ko sa Jap food is that di sya heavy sa stomach...:-)
(ah..pero sarap dessert...green tea ice cream..)

but ice cream is always yummy....*slurp*
ever tried wasabi ice cream? ok..am kidding..I don't know if there is really one being sold commercially..hehehehe
