Neko in Japan: Heian Jingū @ Kyoto (album)

May 6, 2008 (Tuesday)
Kyoto

After visiting Osaka Castle, Calvin and I proceeded by train to Kyoto.
There was also a little adventure there, but that will be posted in another entry.
For this one, I am concentrating fully on the Heian Jingu Shrine.

From wikipedia:
The Heian Shrine (平安神宮, Heian jingū?) is a Shinto shrine located in Kyoto, Japan.

The torii before the main gate is one of the largest in Japan, and the main building, or shaden (社殿), is designed to imitate the Kyoto Imperial Palace on a three-fourth scale.

The Heian Jingū was built in 1895 for the 1,100th anniversary of the establishment of Heiankyō (the old name of Kyoto). The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Kanmu and Emperor Kōmei. The former moved the capital to Heiankyō, and the latter was the last before Emperor Meiji, who moved the capital to Tokyo.

The Heian Jingū hosts the Jidai Matsuri, one of the three most important festivals of Kyoto. The procession of this festival begins at the old Imperial palace, and includes carrying the mikoshi (portable shrines) of Emperors Kanmu and Kōmei to the Heian Jingū .

Although we took a taxi from the hotel where I first checked in (we were in a rush since we were a bit delayed due to Osaka visit, stopover at Kyoto Tourist Information Center as well as check-in at Hotel Miyako and my bag issues), here is how to get to the Heian Shrine: It can be reached by bus number 5 or 100 from Kyoto Station. A more reliable and faster alternative is by subway to Higashiyama Station on the Tozai Line (requires a transfer at Karasuma Oike Station from the Karasuma Line) followed by a 10 minute walk to the shrine.

Shrine hours: 6:00 to 17:30 (slightly longer/shorter in summer/winter)
Admission: Free

Garden hours: 8:30 to 17:00 (slightly longer/shorter in summer/winter)
Admission: 600 Yen

Since it was already mid-afternoon and we had a few more shrines/temples and Gion to visit, I regret to say I was unable to visit the beautiful garden located behind the shrine's main buildings.

Although this was my first temple visit in Japan (and in Kyoto to boot), I must say that I am not really a big fan of the orange color..though it makes for very nice pictures :-) I heard that one of the best times to pay a visit would be in April, when the garden's many weeping cherry trees are in full bloom.

Sake? I thought they might be burial urns for cremated Shinto priests. Just guessing.

its really different seeing it up close and personal versus in the pictures...

when I saw it first, my mouth was agape...imagine me all bug-eyed about it...but Calvin told me the color is really the usual thing for temples...
