Adventure ala Alcoy (photo album)

Alcoy, Cebu, 24-25 November 2007 - A vacation in Cebu. My daddy's birthday. An overdue reunion. So a different getaway was the order of the day.
With my parents in tow...off to Alcoy we went!
(Over my dad's grumblings of how far away it was, but 91 km? hahaha! its laughably a short distance for some people who don't live in Cebu). Ever since I heard my college buddy's Erwin's parents built a house by the sea in that town I have always wanted to visit it, especially since my mom comes from Sibonga, another town in Southern Cebu.
Benjie (Technologian also) and her kids Joy and Kean also came with us. She occasionally visits their own house by the sea in Malabuyoc (west-south of Cebu and near Kawasan Falls).

Mom, Benjie and Erwin with an old-timer of the sea
Now that I think of it more as I write these words, I really think we should push through with our tentative plan of going on a trip "round South". With friends and acquaintances scattered all around Cebu towns far from the city, even if we don't know where they all are (or even if they are in Cebu), I'm sure we can get by with maybe five town visits. There are lots of lovely, crumbling-old, historic churches also on the way.
On this trek on the beach side, we marveled at all the nice new houses which were built alongside that stretch of sea and sand.
We asked who were the owners, and we inevitably get answered by "a Japanese...", "a Korean..", "a Belgian.." and the list goes on. I joked around that maybe I should get married to a foreigner so I could have one of those houses. Haha! Ironic ha...
We capped it by eating halo-halo on a totally unexpected restaurant.
Seems more and more establishments are being constructed on the southern portion of the island.
A far cry from those days when we had only gas lamps when I visited my lola's place in Sibonga.

Triple B as the sign says
(Since it was only Benjie who brought money along, we had to split the P400 among six people. Each halo-halo cost about P90. I kidded around by trying to dissuade them from having one by coming up with excuses why they shouldn't taste it at all).
On the way back to Cebu City, we dropped by various places for a short while. One was Obong spring with ice-cold water for dipping into.

Waah, I wish I had time for a dip
Then Dalaguete, where the once very popular Argao Beach was really located (it sounded better calling it that way).
Dalaguete has lots of wonderfully fine-sand beaches and scenery.
Since their beaches are usually found on the side of a sheer cliff and not all publicly fenced in...when I was grade 5 and on a road trip to Dumaguete in Negros, we stopped mid-summer on the side of the Dalaguete main road and gleefully dipped into the sea, ostensibly to cool off..but got attacked by a school of jellyfish! That is why I always remember this place with a grimace and grin on my face.
Next was the town of Argao where you have scrumptious torta and as usual, my lovely old Spanish-era buildings.
There is a picture of an old clock in their belltower somewhere here on this page.
Then on to Sibonga to check on the little hut my mom was buiilding as her "prayer house".
Sibonga's old church has a beautifully painted ceiling (shades of Sistine? pwede na rin).
We then got snarled for two hours of traffic in Carcar where a fiesta was going on (the town with shoes, chicharon, ampao and bocarillo as I posted before).
As we were driving through Naga City, I got the bright idea of dropping on an unsuspecting Rosemarie's beautifully-furnished house since Erwin knew where it stood. And so I I met for the first time Rose's only child and my godchild kuno (poor boy, he doesn't know what he is letting himself in for).
That was also one funny experience as I just knocked on their door at the dead of the night after calling her cellphone and pretending to be still in Manila..hehehe.
And so we connected again and planned a lunch/dinner while I was in Cebu and probably other December activities should I be back for the Yuletide season.
There are a variety of companies with their plants already dotting the way on this Southern route. I hope it will still retain its charms when I visit it in the future.

    Thanks heaps, Win!

On another note, parang sobra naman yatang mahal ng P90.00 na halo-halo! Baka yung mga foreigners diyan are the ones pushing up the prices with their Yen and Won and Francs, etc.

tenk u Oselle..pero dami ko pang rice i-cook before I can say I can take good shots consistently.

for this shot, I was focusing at first on the suaki he was handling, tapos when he smiled at me, napa-step back ako by the brilliance and innocence of his smile..buti na lang I was able to press the shutter as I really took a big step back...

so medyo may konting dissatisfaction ako sa composition (now that I know ano yon..hahaha)...pero bahala na..basta nakita ko yung smile nya and captured it forevah! di vah!

for this particular beach Jack, frankly I was disappointed when I first saw it at low tide.

you could see garbage littered on the shore...bottles, shoes, dog poo (oh well di natin ma iwasan) kaya nga di na rin ako naligo..ehehe..its a good thing I didn't think to swim in it at 11 pm when we arrived the previous night.

still though, I was told that that yucky thing I was looking strewn at (the green stuff, not the garbage) meant that there was a very rich marine life there (baka they thrive on the bottles perhaps?) thats why the supply of suaki, clams, little crabs etc. seems almost limitless if day by day hordes of people descend on this shore to pick the bounty of nature.

what I miss most here is the casualness of activities...in Manila, if I go somewhere, I have to plan it..even if I just go to SM Megamall sa Ortigas...don sa Cebu, parang you decide you want to go..then just go...without too much thinking..which sometimes takes the fun out of it...

I heard that there is a gov't-sponsored trip round south of Cebu...where you get to visit some towns and their churches...get greeted like a local celebrity when you get to each town and have a mini-feast...

trip ko talga before was to go on a road trip and stop at every town of Cebu...towns like Carcar, which is Vigan-like (not the streets though) in terms of spanish-style houses and its church wherein you have to climb up...like Sibonga, where the ceiling is painted with cherubs and saints, there is this other town also wherein you have to really puff your way up a long flight of stairs...

may mga "watchtowers of the kings" also scattered around the island...

    thank you Chito!!

...medyo obvious that I am trying also to promote Cebu kaya I try as much as possible na ngayon to bring my cam along on my trips....sayang nga before kc mas pristine pa ang beauty ng mga lugar na to...mahirap i-describe ngayon eh..though if I were really critical, di pa sya really up to standards when I think of what a resort should be...well, ok lang..di naman claim nila 5 star sila...

oo, medyo relaxed ang hitsura ko sa labas nga even if praning internally..hahaha!

I have my friends and parents to thank for it...nag wash lang ako ng dishes twice and drove our car..the rest, abah..para akong donya at iniwan ko sila kung pano nila gawin yung cooking and cleaning..hehehe...

mahal nga P90 sa halo-halo no?
but...ang secreto pala..is that they don't use water for the finely shaved-ice...its milk which has been frozen which they use..now if its gatas ng kalabaw ewan ko..pero sinulit ko talaga ang 90 na yon...and while we were supposed to share a glass between us, luckily my mom's maternal instincts kicked in, and she let me have most of it..taste lang sa kanya! *grin*

    hi MeAnn...

Alegre Beach resort would be in Northern part of Cebu, in the town of Sogod.

If memory serves me right, Alegre beach would be the resort that Cebu Plaza Hotel (now Marco Polo in Nivel Hills, Lahug, Cebu City) owned and operated. If that is the case, then its not in the southern part of the island.

Now, this is funny..coz basically the meaning of "Alegre" is opposite to what the resort is/how the resort is in reality. Don't get me wrong..."alegre" in Cebuano (though Spanish in origin) leans towards fun, vivaciousness, liveliness..well you get the drift.

but Alegre beach resort is I think geared towards people who are for a quieter, more romantic and sedate getaway...yung gusto lang mag relax (in fairness am sure may mga water sports and other activities sila for those who want it)..

its when we go off to knock of young/middle-aged coconuts (tama kaya yung term?), scoop the meat and juice out..put on milk and sugar and sometimes put in crumbled (but not finely!) skyflakes and put them in mismatched glasses and cups....plus add ice pa if may available...

we usually do this in the towns far off Cebu na may mga coconut trees (the fun is trying to climb or looking at someone you paid to climb them) or sa gilid ng beaches...

we either sit by the beach and enjoy the treat..or if walng beach, lakad ng lakad around the country roads...o di ba...relaxing? *wink*
