Corregidor, Philippines - The shape of the island is like that of a tadpole. It is also known as "The Rock".
This was a day tour on December 9, 2007 (Sunday) with Keen, my fellow bisdak. We both were in the same orientation batch in HP. The tour was through Sun Cruises. Their website address is placed in a comment in one of the pictures below.
On the boat we got seated between a bunch of Americans and a lone Japanese. We talked with both nationalities, though the Americans were understandably friendlier. The Japanese guy drank SMB and complimented me on my Japanese when he overheard me giving some basic phrases to my friend Keen, who was keen on being friendly.
When Keen found out his name was "Hiroshi", he tried to get him to open up by comparing him to the Japanese character "Hiro" in the tv series "Hero". Unfortunately, there was a generation gap since Hiroshi-san didn't watch that show claiming old age as the reason :-)
We met another interesting guy, an American who just flew in from Japan. He was in the business of disposing of unexploded firearms and shells - no wonder his camera was full of pictures of the big shells and nothing else. During lunch he shared a table with us and I had fun talking with him over classic movies and actors. He was much older than both of us, but I had the advantage of liking old movies, and poor Keen this time experienced the generation gap again.
A group of schoolgirls were in our "bus" cum tram and their teacher was trying to keep track of them all over the place. Japanese tourists went into one bus, all the other people and nationalities went into the English-speaking buses. Its the same facts and story the tour guides tell all parties, regardless of the language....at least that's what they told us.
Some of the younger Japanese apologize after they hear the telling of the tale, some of the older ones cite reasons for doing what they did and putting in an occasional Banzai or two. I do not take sides on this, but war is war...what can you expect?
There is only one hotel in the island - its a 31-star hotel according to our joker-guide (he told us we could have as souvenir one of the gun barrels if we could lift it up). 31 star because 31 rooms.
The whole experience seemed akin to me to the Amazing Race. We got delayed in setting off from Manila, but they didn't extend our departure time, so literally we zoomed around the island and had on the average about 10 minutes per place we visited.
This was my regret. I could not fully savor the experience of the atmosphere - just imagine the lives and drama which unfolded on that island more than 50 years ago!
If I were given enough time, I swear I could have heard the marching footsteps of the American and Filipino soldiers who were stationed there...
I could have seen in my mind's eye how tranquil it was before the war and people living there would have gone about their daily business...playing tennis, swimming on the beach and on the huge pool...now, nobody lives on this island except for those working in the lone hotel...and they don't even have their families here.
I could have felt the despair but unflinching commitment of the Japanese soldiers who blew themselves up underneath the tunnel where a troop of American soldiers passed by...
I could have coughed alongside President Manuel Quezon as he lived with his lung ailment underneath the laterals of the tunnels and spending Christmas and his inauguration on this war-torn island...
I could have sweated hot and cold alternately when the sirens and sounds of bombing flew all over the place....and felt the melancholy of war itself...
Well, I did ...but just a little bit.
I was more concerned in trying to capture the scenery and my mind got so full of dates, stories, names, anecdotes, quotes that I gave up in the end and just sat back and clicked away.
Camera used: Kodak V803 Easyshare.

But then again, that movie was about Alcatraz Island, the former site of a maximum security prison (which as you know is sometimes informally referred by its pop-culture name, The Rock)...:-)

There is one hotel. There is also an overnight package tour being offered by Sun Cruises.
May McArthur Cafe yata...but I didn't see any other eating places besides the Corregidor Inn we had our lunch at. I think if one does stay overnight, its more for getting a longer time frame in going all around the various sites..so 1 day ought to be enough...if you stay for one week, wala ka yatang magawang iba unless its to just feel the atmosphere...

I am sure in other parts of the world there are also islands known as "The Rock" in their country...natuwa lang ako kc I could imagine a movie being shot in Corregidor and titled that way.
Incidentally, it was said that the island was used a penitentiary or correctional institution by the Spanish and came to be called El Corregidor. Buti naman di naging max-security prison or else daming parallels na...

May be the term "corregidor" was related to maritime traffic in that area. I'm not sure if there's a lighthouse there. But it sure make sense to put one there, which could somehow "correct" the ships' navigation of the entrance to Manila Bay.
I think the monicker, "The Rock" was more of recent origin, i.e. wartime terminology to characterize or give a sense of invincibility, more like the Rock of Gibraltar than Alcatraz.

from wikipedia:
Corregidor is an island in the entrance of the Philippines' Manila Bay. Due to its position in the bay, it has served as a focal point for the naval defenses of the capital city of Manila. During World War II, Corregidor was the site of several battles and its fall to the Japanese forces was instrumental in the subsequent capture of the Philippines and the retreat of the United States in the early stages of the war. Currently, it is an important historic and tourist site and is managed under the jurisdiction of Cavite City.
The island is about 48 kilometers west of Manila. It is shaped like a tadpole, with its tail running eastward, and has a land area of 9 km². Along with Caballo (which lies 2 km south of the "tail's" tip), it partially blocks the entrance to Manila Bay, and thus has strategic importance. It also creates a northern and southern entrance to the bay.
Because of its rocky landscape and the fortifications of Fort Mills, the island was also known as "the Rock".
Under the Spanish era, Corregidor served not only as a fortress of defense and a penal institution, but also as a signal outpost to warn Manila of the approach of hostile ships, and as a station for Customs inspection.. Corregidor comes from the Spanish word corregir, meaning "to correct." One story states that, due to the Spanish system wherein all ships entering Manila Bay were required to stop and have their documents checked and corrected, the island was called Isla del Corregidor (literally, Island of Correction).

than Alcatraz
Galeng, Chito, about Corregidor "correcting" the ships' navigation.
Wikipedia on the Alcatraz: It served as a lighthouse, then a military fortification, then a military prison followed by a federal prison until 1963, when it became a national recreation area.
When we went to the Alcatraz tour, they said in its 29 years of operation, the penitentiary hasn't recorded any prisoner as having ever successfully escaped. In the movie, Sean Connery's character also explained that; hence, the name "the Rock." The Rock of Gibraltar instead is literally a rock, a massive block of stone.

Whenever I hear or read anything about island penitentiaries, what always comes to mind is not "The Birdman of Alcatraz," or the made-for-TV movie "Prison Break," but a movie called "Papillon." Parang ang natatandaan ko kasi doon sa movie na yun is the scene where the main character, after failing earlier in his first attempt to escape inland, studied the movement of the waves from atop a cliff to determine which time of day was the best time to jump-off that cliff and be carried away by the receding tide instead of being drawn back and torn to pieces by the razor-sharp edged stones below the cliff. Galing ng movie na yun.

Cat, this is a very nice tour of Corregidor. When I was in elementary, we used to travel to this island every 2 weeks because my uncle was the Undersecretary of National Defense. His name was Alberto R. de Joya. He would bring his parents and the whole de Joya clan on a tour. It was like instead of having our weekly reunion at our grandparent's home, we did it there. We would take the PT Boat or a bigger military ship to transport us there. It is nice to see how much this island has come a long way and it is very presentable. In those days, all the batteries (giant canons) were rusty, the roads were muddy and we toured on a 6 X 6 military truck. I remember, Malinta tunnel was always an eerie place that you can hear the moans and groans of soldiers suffering from pain. I heard that some of them would have surgery without anesthesia because they ran out of supplies. Thank you for sharing this with us. To me, this is very nostalgic because I've been to this rock island so many times and these photos just bring back all the wonderful memories of our trips there. Aloha Cat.

hi Joey!
Thank you for your comments. May pictures ka pa ba yung mga panahon when your family went to this island? I'm sure striking din ang dating if so..regardless if medyo neglected and mukhang kakalabas lang sa guerra pa ng isla.
*shudders* even if the tunnel was cleaned up, just going thru the light and sounds show was enough to stir my hairs at the start at least (vivid na vivid sa imagination ko esp when the sounds of bombing and sirens would go off)...sa tingin ko masisiraan ako ng bait just being cooped up inside...
I was very glad to have gone here, I still wish I could go to all the historic spots here in the Philippines...and so paunti-unti ko naman ginagawa...

Take care Cat and Merry Christmas.

in the museum there were old photos of Corregidor, but they were mostly pre-war and during the war itself - not so much on afterwards (like 50s and 60s, but before the rehabilitation)...
