March 15-16, 2008
Zambales, Philippines
For someone who has lived a good two and a half decades of her life within 20 minutes travel to lovely beaches in both Mactan Island and Cebu, the prospect of visiting a remote, unblemished island is not a new experience. However, I've never been to Zambales, and I thought it would be interesting and fun to spend the weekend with some teams at the office which I don't ordinarily get to interact with. What better way to make new friends and strengthen bonds with the old ones?
The trip took about 4 hours from Manila passing through the city of Olongapo then heading further north to San Antonio and to Barangay Pundakit. There were a couple of stopovers - for breakfast (yum, I can still taste the tapa soaking in the native vinegar!) and another one in Subic for the chance to empty our bladders, and another one to do some shopping at the wet markets in the towns nearest Pundakit.
Pundakit's beach is located behind a mountain and faces the horizon of the setting sun. Fronting it is Capones Island, which is accessible for overnight camping, day picnic and swimming. Bancas are present along the beach of Pundakit, and available for rent anytime. Overnight stay is allowed but with prearranged pick up with a boatman.
I had not expected that going on this trip was going to be an experience which would run the gamut of human emotions and situations - from....
excitement and anticipation (yehey, never been to Zambales!)
sleepiness (waiting at 5:30 am for your fellow campers with less than 2 hours sleep under your belt is normal)
comedic instances (little moments sprinkled generously throughout the outing)
competition (pouncing like piranha on the grilled liempo, smoked fish and tinola prepared by our world-class chefs)
a little dash of horror (a cat meowing in the dark of dawn in the supposedly uninhabited island we camped on was preceded by "aswang" tales the night before)
pain and smushiness (when your bones are too used to a soft mattress and its your first time in a tent with fellow-drinkers)
sporty activities (climbing up steep vertical surfaces by chomping your teeth on dry grass like a goat)
boozy nights (at 8 pm most of the booze, a mix of lambanog, absolut, tequila, beer, chivas regal etc.were already consumed...)
comedy-horror (somebody who will remain unnamed slept like a log after enduring tequila shots and was sprawled like a murder victim in CSI then became a tourist spot for everybody else to have pictures taken with)
romance (bonfires can spark a romantic mood sprouting from good-natured teasing and it lead to repeated questions and answers which kept on looping back)
dramatic moments (you thought walk-out scenes only happened in teleseryas?)
almost fight-scene (well it was at an entrance to a hospital, so no need to worry)
hunger pangs (consumed serveral rounds of ice buko etc. before eating a big bowl of tacos).
oh yes, I didn't get to use the shovel at all for any bathroom breaks *grin*...pls remember, that as of this writing, there is no bathroom except for the surrounding sea...
as always, I've not posted all photos as some will remain with me as blackmail material for use later on...hehehe...
P.S. I will try to add more pictures later on when I can get hold of the other pics from our fellow-campers.

In my boys scouting days, we used to call it kaibo (how the hell I don't know). Dig your own, cover your own. So, I guess if the romantic moods pushes on, one of the partners can offer to dig for the other and can say "I dig ya!"

I think it can hold 2 people...and later on I found out there is a cover for it na maging sarado na sya against the rain etc. and can provide privacy..pero for this, ok kc mahangin na sya..

I bumped into Fritzie (our officemate and who is in one or two of the shots above) who went also to Capones but actually slept on Anawangin (if I am not mistaken about the name)...
I saw her pics (sa dami di pa sya nag post or nag upload daw) of the place..its really more beautiful kc mas malaki ang cove and yung shore, and it has a CR...also the shots taken there didn't look like they were taken sa Pinas.. For one thing, naka pine trees tapos naka sand sa baba...from afar you would think it was the mountains in the background and snow on the foreground...
pero kc yung sa amin is pang back to basics...as in do everything yourself, which is masaya gawin din once in a while...medyo masakit sa buto mo..hehehe

My pleasure BNK and thank you for enjoying it and taking time out to comment...ang gusto ko talaga is that more people get to enjoy and discover our country...
wala namang regulation ngayon...I heard before daw, may tinayo na resort, pero the construction got abandoned..ewan bakit...it seemed to be on the other side of this island, that part has stronger waves...
for this part of Capones Island, no fee, we only had paid fees for the entrance fee to the resort where we took a room..the entrance was P60...I don't know how much ang room pero I don't think it was that expensive...medyo ok pa naman yata ang presyo dito...
ang buko bar 10 or 15 pesos na...payts na...life is good...

I think the Philippines has a lot more to offer in terms of beaches and natural attractions than Thailand or Bali, pero bakit mas maraming pumupuntang turista dun kaysa Pilipinas?
A couple of Canadian friends went on an Asian tour and their plan was to make a stop in the Philippines. I was ready to give them names of my Multiply contacts (like you, hugz and Guia, Meann, Che, Sally, etc) so they'll know some local people. Unfortunately, their travel agent talked them out of it. Canada has a travel advisory (meaning: warning, travel at your own risk) on travel to the Philippines due to unstable political situation, rising crime specially robbery. Sayang, they could've had a great time.

What's "payts na?"
BNK, di ko alam if ganon din dito sa Manila, pero sa amin..ang meaning nya is parang - ok nang ganon ...like if I eat hanging rice and danggit e payts na yan...or nakapunta na ako sa Zamboanga pero nag-bus ng pauntog-untog..ok na yon..payts na...

What you were wearing are the big bulky life vests. Merong mga lighter and thinner life vests that you can pack in your knapsack or luggage, mas mahal nga lang.
maghahanap ako nyan one of these days, yung foldable sana nga tapos manipis or baka mas ok if double purpose sya..hehehe.;..pwede syang bag, pwedeng life vest...
at saka underwarter cam sana...

If they survived without digging, they've got to be plugged up after a few days. Ika nga, namamahay daw. Has to be done at home. Unless, sa dagat nga ginanap.
I think everybody waited until we could get back to the hotel the next day..after all overnight lang naman eh..in my case, I cannot also do that kind of thing basta di sa pamamahay ko unless its extreme circumstances....like foot-foot sa tyan..
