Neko in Japan: Gion Thereabouts (album)

May 7, 2008
Kyoto

I took some pictures of the places I passed by as I tried to find my way to Hanami-koji, where Gion Corner would be.

The stretch of Hanami-Koji street depicts the elegance of Hanamachi (entertainment district). The eaves of long established, old-fashioned tea houses and restaurants are placed cheek-by-jowl along the street.

One find was the Minamiza Theater. I wish I had more time really....

This theatre is the birthplace of 'kabuki,' and a landmark of Kyoto I remember Calvin pointing this out to me on my first walk through Gion. Not only kabuki plays, but also concerts and 'rakugo' (traditional comic storytelling) performances are held here.

Built in 1615, and boasting nearly 400 years of history, the Minamiza is Kabuki at its finest. Though plays are continually running throughout the year, they are especially proud of its December Kaomize performances. Japan's most famous thespians "show their faces" before their admiring audiences. The pace of the drama may be a bit slow for some people though.

In the vicinity is the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theatre which is the venue of the annual "Miyako Odori" (Miyako Dance), in which Geiko (Geisha) and Maiko (apprentice Geiko) of Gion Kobu introduce the Kyomai (Kyoto dance).

1 - Kamogawa River (I think)
2 - Shijo
3 - Minamiza Theater
4 - Hanami-koji

Ang gaganda talaga na mga manhole covers nila doon. Iba - iba ang design, as if each was sculpted for a particular hole.
