Neko in Japan: Saved by Green Tea (album)

May 7, 2008
Gion, Kyoto

After looking at the performances at Gion Corner, I wanted to have some dinner.
I remembered reading about "Isobe", which offers kaiseki and other varied Japanese dishes.

As I was already in the Gion district, and after reading my guide book...I thought that it would be simple... all I had to do was retrace my steps and go back past what I had visited yesterday - passing through Yasaka Shrine and then Maruyama Park (I think this was what I had passed on the way from Kodai-ji to Yasaka).

According to Frommer's Japan, the restaurant was supposed to be open from 11 am to 10 pm..so a 9 pm order should be okay, or so I reasoned.

A little while later, I found myself hungry and trudging on the park path which I could barely see or remember. Believe me, if it wasn't Japan, I'd never have dared walk with no flashlight, and no idea actually of where I could find the restaurant... and with just the light from whatever the moon was reflecting through the trees to help me.

Phew! after some 10 minutes or more of walking (I was strutting as if I knew the area hehehe), I finally located the Isobe restaurant - luckily I was able to read the hiragana characters spelling out its name.

On the other hand, waaaah!!!! even if it was just 9 pm...the woman gestured that they were already closed. Bowing politely back, I didn't argue anymore and trudged wearily back to Gion, wondering if maybe I should eat again at Fuijiya like the other night.

Before reaching Fujiya however, I remembered that Calvin had gestured to a place where he said he and his friends usually had dessert...now if only I could remember where it was.

My stomach growled as I passed by a certain stairway, and that was my cue that it was the place :-)

As you can see below, I ordered a set of green tea drink, green tea cake and another dish which had fruits and ice cream.

I think the name of the place was Tsujiri, but I am basing that on the picture I've taken of their doorway when I finally satisfied my hunger pangs.

Japanese dessert talaga. Was that "green tea' kinda bitter?

even if I wasn't super hungry, I would agree that it looks and tastes delicious...

all the dishes presented in their menu looked scrumptious...but I asked the waitress to recommend or choose between the two sets I was interested in...

if they would not have closed by 10;30 pm, I'd have ordered both :-)

I didn't feel energetic at all, coz the last meal I ate was around 12 noon..after I had visited the Kyoto Imperial Palace, e umikot pa ako sa ibat-ibang lugar, culminating sa Gion Corner and more walking...

so I think the sweet stuff here was my lifesaver..I'd have really keeled after 30 more minutes of walking...*grin*

yep, its really in keeping with the atmosphere of Gion...

all of the decorations and designs of the places I've been to are mostly elegant and pleasing to the eye...

pero Oselle di ka mahilig ng green tea na cold drink like green tea frappe di ba?

my fave was the green tea castelle sa Nagasaki...ay..sarap...and this cake reminded me of it...

    zenzen...:-)

all were sweet...or baka naman sa taste buds ko po kaya?

I bought macha (green tea powder) and made some here back in the Phils..that for me wasn't sweet...but I didn't consider it bitter either...

probably takes some getting used to...sometimes I still recall the complaint of an officemate before when he tasted yung green tea frappe sa Starbucks...damo daw, damo...bwahaha!
